Week 7
[Well that weekend sucked. The Champions are down a dad and a bean and shrinking their numbers smaller and smaller, less and less.
There's no sign of life in the spaceport aside from PAL's omnipresent voice and SIS, the helpful asSIStant who has some control over certain heres and theres in the spaceport. She (and PAL) are available at all times and can appear anywhere if called. There is, however, a new floor to explore. Just hop in the elevator and pchoo.]

Those words haunt her. He died-- died saving all of them. More than anyone he deserved to live. Blaze's mercy after she'd almost condemned them all only stung more bitterly.
That's not the only thing on her mind either, although it's certainly at the forefront. But there's also... Ardyn. And Soma.
Being remembered is probably the greatest compliment you can pay to the dead.
That... no longer feels appropriate. Nor enough. And it's certainly not all she has in mind. Just as he had-- more than remember, she knew they were waiting for them. To be saved. She never had the opportunity to tell Ardyn that she would-- but she hoped he knew all the same.
If I'm... him? Then does "Soma" even really exist? The person who made friends here, who hurt when others died? The one who promised to help you? What if he's just a... fading illusion? The sheepskin hiding the wolf?
The girl that knew him while he lived these past few weeks had hypocritically seen him for the terrifying monster she feared and little else. She had never gotten past her distrust and looked properly at the person trying to help her even as she shunned him. Here she was cruel and judgmental. But there... there, once upon a time she'd seen them as equals-- cared for him as much as she felt safe allowing herself.
She stays in room 1 a bit longer than usual. She... has a lot to think about. But after a while she goes to the resturaunt to feed herself-- and anyone else that might need it. But between making tea and breakfast she remembers... can practically hear the way Choromatsu had said 'now you're my hero' and chokes up a little bit, tears in her eyes. But she's... doing her best.
She'd promised. And Touko Lucis Caelum keeps her promises.
Eventually she even tries adventuring out. She wanders about the gates, visiting all of them, following names-- some famliar and others unheard of. Lunafreya... Prompto... Osomatsu and Karamatsu... Chloe... Jaime and Bolton... Byakuya's. That's perhaps the one she spends the most time at, but you can catch her at all of them-- reading and learning faces and titles. At Byakuya's though she touches the pin and makes a pained expression--]

It's a week's worth of memories that ache and claw at the insides of Jane's very being. A dance party that was supposed to be happy, that she tried so hard to enjoy, ruined by dread and secrets; the movie night, Jamie and a spark of bonding between them and the picture of a baby she spied over his shoulder, Beauty and the Beast and - her own self loathing over powers she didn't remember, and how useless they became in the face of death, how much she tried, and tried, and pushed at herself to keep trying in the face of Ricky's body, Kurumi without her gloves - she needed them, her hands always got cold, she needed them, and Light...
She was only trying to spare Kurumi from the airlock. She gave Jane the knife, and told her not to look. This was how she left them, and this...this was the moment that made the Jane in those photographs who she was, she realizes, as things slot into place in her brain as she wakes up: tired and grim, mourning, and yet alive despite it all. Willing to fight, and to love others, despite it all. And she knows, despite how much she wants to lock her door and cry and not emerge, that she can't.
If you see Jane in the morning, it's only when she goes to check on first Xander, then Yurika, because she knows they're hurting, too. She knows they remembered. And if they need someone to sit with and talk to, let it be her, let them lean on her when she has leaned on them again and again. And for Xander in particular, well...there might be something they need to discuss, if he can stand it.
The afternoon sees Jane more...visible, at least? Especially in the newly unlocked floor, because holy shit - holy shit is it huge. The central area is mostly wandered in, Jane peeking hesitantly into the stores and restaurants, and can be spotted poking around in any of them until she gets to Concourse One, and just...stops. And looks at the gates, something big and gnawing in the pit of her stomach as she looks at the pictures and titles and mementos of...of Champions. Of the people who went through this before she woke up on that first day.
She lingers at Gates 4, 15, and 21. They're the only familiar faces she can see, and she sits quietly at each and looks at the pictures and cries, softly and unobtrusively.
She dips into the Art Room and retrieves a sketchbook and some colored pens before crossing to Concourse Two, finding Gate 8, where Lightning is, and just. Writes. Looking up at her picture whenever she pauses, as if she's still looking to the other woman for guidance, even now, that she's doing the right thing, and she doesn't leave until it's close to curfew to turn in.]

But what does start happening is a small pile outside the door. Not letters. A plush bird. A necklace with charms and rings. A black jacket. A black bird onesie. Bride of Ruri, who gives a confused beep and starts doing her job down the hall but passes by room 7 a lot.
At some point, when he's alone, if he's alone, and staring blankly at the ceiling:]

And he remembers opening the cell door. The Oracle coin. The light of suspicion cast on him, bright and blinding... and that being shot down quickly. Aside from one, no one had believed it for a second. And somehow, that lightens the pressure on his chest, his heart. Noctis closes his eyes and breathes in, deeply, evenly. And Noctis stands and does one thing first. He checks on Nari.
Noctis looks through his belongings, after that. He withdraws a moon pendant, then goes to seek out Touko.
After that? He explores. He goes to the second floor, and for a while he checks out the convenience store. It's almost nostalgic, and Noctis smiles a little as he looks at everything. ]
No Ebony, huh... I guess I'm not surprised.
[ Noctis exits, and goes to the first concourse. There, he's greeted with a hell of a sight. Gates, a lot of them, and gate thirteen catches his eye first. His breath stops in his chest, and his hands start to shake.
Ever at your side.
He takes the camera, places the strap around his neck. He knows what's coming up, or he has a very good idea of it. Sure enough... his eyes fall on gate sixteen when his feet take him there, and Noctis does not move for a very long time. Gently, he brushes his fingers along the fabric of the wedding dress, like he can't believe what he's looking at. Like it's something precious taken form.
He stays there for a long time. ]

Another week, yet another tangled web of memories to sort through at the start of her waking hours. What she remembers just adds to the frustration yesterday gave her. She remembers painful things, and the times her friends were there to comfort her. It fills another space in the puzzle, that much closer to... whatever the end of her memories would be. She knew already that Leon hadn't survived with them, but to think he managed to save their lives.
Their friends were waiting for them, somewhere, out there waiting to be saved. That was enough to pull her out of bed for the day. She wills herself to go into the restaurant for the sake of making something to eat. Bacon, eggs, nothing fancy. There's enough for others, she makes sure of that.
And then it's onto the new areas, which include... oh boy, a Spacebucks. She makes the mistake of going inside to check it out, and promptly speedwalking back out of it when she figures out what it's all about.
Her investigating takes her right out to the concourses where... it seems she's looking at all the gates, but the ones she spends the most time staring at are Gate 9, and, possibly surprisingly, Gate 24. There, she even messes a bit with the collapsible lazersword.
Finally, at the end of the day, she's back to the information desk.]

[She doesn't press the button. She just... hopes.]

Oh. Concourses. Concourses with people's names and photos and... oh. Gate 1-17. Max just kind of stops and stares, for a good long while. ]

[ Then she decides that whatever else is in the concourses frankly she would rather not so she explores the middle section and finds... oh, the holodeck. Anyone who follows her in will find Max in a... bedroom? It definitely doesn't look like her style, but from the way she's slowly walking around it and smiling it looks like somewhere she's happy to be.
Later on in the day she goes to the art room and starts... roughing out a painting, it looks like? She's busily sketching out what looks like a nice small town by the sea, and getting some rough shapes in on the canvas.
And at some point in the day, she goes looking for Aiden Price, and also heads down to the Information Desk. ]

The memories that come back to her are even worse, though by now that's hardly a surprise. Talking with Yuuri about her sister, and about a future that seemed more certain. Discovering "Cards Against Humanity." Queenie's party. (PAL's party?) Clarith trying to befriend PAL. The sleepover. Doing an impression of Heart (...where did that fit?). Sir Canaan. Gathering flowers with Yuuri. And... everything with Choromatsu. The confusion, the panic, the relief... and of course the question of who it was that saved him. At this point she'd believe it really was Takumi. She's late leaving her room.
When she finally does, though, and she's ready to explore. Maybe a little too ready to explore, seeing as she leaves without breakfast, but a stop by Spacebucks solves that. She doesn't stay there for long.
She spends more time in the bookstore, searching through the shelves. Some of the books here actually look interesting (better than The Scylla Defense at least), but she ignores them. She's looking for useful books, which... seem to be in shorter supply.]
...I don't suppose I'll find Yl'lb Ein, the Science Mind here.
[Later she makes it out to Concourse 1. Which... sure looks like a memorial! One where she immediately recognizes a name. She starts walking down, paying special attention to a few of them:
She doesn't actually start immediately, first contemplating Gate 1. Should she move the memorial from room 4 up here? Or maybe steal the portrait from here and take it down there? Ultimately she does neither.
Gate 2 catches her interest. This woman, Lucina, is wearing what looks like a tiara in her portrait. Could she have been a fellow Sovereign? She puts her hand on the sword, intending to pick it up, but... it doesn't feel right.
Right next to that one is Gate 4, where something happens I guess. She continues down the even-numbered side, pausing in front of Gates 6, 8, and 10 to ponder the people being memorialized and wonder what they were like. Sir Max liked to read. Sir Thomas loved someone. Someone loved Sir Tsurugi.
...and then there's Gate 12. This portrait doesn't look any more familiar than the others, but she curiously opens up the graduation album... and Yuuri Wakasa stares back at her.
So here she stays for a while, sitting in the waiting area, looking through the album, crying.]

He hasn't felt this way since his mother died, if he was honest- when he lost Elise there had been no time for this quiet grieving, only a shocked destruction. And when they lost Margulis he had held his suffering back for the others until it burst out of him in the holodeck like toxic sludge that he only wanted to lay in and die. But this was different- that day so long ago, the morning after he watched her just... go... he had laid up in bed for a time, breathing fast shallow breaths and trying to remind himself that if Father knew he was hiding he would be scolded. That it was real, and to pretend it wasn't would only hurt everyone else.
He had done the same when Lightning died- it was already too cruel for Kurumi and Ricky to die like they did, but Lightning, Light. He had hidden away like a deer with an arrow in her flank, waiting to bleed out slowly. They had come to try and comfort him. The Doctor with his bottle and grim eyes- he was dead too, now. The others. Jane.
He hoped they wouldn't come today.
Still, he can't hide forever, and even the short time seems too greedy. So eventually he comes out, eyes dark, and feeling not only loss for the woman he loved, but also mulling over the memory of Jamie and.... the little green man, from the pictures. They had all been so scared. They were all there, and worried. Like a family when someone wandered away too long at market. Jamie had gotten alien pumpkins, had mentioned Xander's own birthday. It's in a haze that he wanders the port, eventually ending up at the Gates.
He visits each one from his group in turn, and later when he finds Jamie's he puts the album he had received there. Then, for the rest of the afternoon he stays at the second gate 8, the necklace he recognized from his dreams of the After- of the house- but still not remembering where it came from for sure, held between his fingers like prayer beads. Fitting, as praying seems to be exactly what he's doing. She was, after all, his dear goddess.
Eventually he can't manage that anymore, so he retires to the Spacebucks, sipping pumpkin lattes and staring out into space.]

He's not dressed up at all today--no jackets, or shirts, or pants, or hats, or kigus, or his charm necklace. Just the undersuit and nothing more. He looks like he hasn't slept or eaten well in days. Mostly because he hasn't slept or eaten well in days. He ends up in the restaurant, at least, so he's probably eaten something, right?
His sleeve is rolled up, showing the tattoo on his arm. It's strange to see it pristine in a way it hasn't been for weeks, no burns. No cuts where, before the Doctor had done what he had, he'd began to mark off the dead. Even now, he sits with the urge to grab a knife and whittle away at the lines of ink on his skin. How far down does a tattoo go anyway?
He can see the dawn that will awake him in the next morning.
I will see you again, when the sunrise breaks over this long and despairing night.
...How is he supposed to find something to smile about again after all of this? I take it back, he probably hasn't gotten anything to eat yet, maybe someone make sure he does.
In the end, he finally goes to pick up some things in the duty-free, and some of it might actually be useful! And some of it might not. Some of it hurts. He waffles outside room 4, worrying at a big ol' book in his hands.
He does not explore the new areas yet. He's not sure that he cares, not right now. And it'll probably just have something dumb or upsetting or both. But he does end up in the VR room.]

[In the evening, Yurika peruses the bookstore and picks up a romance novel that seems fitting for space travel. She flips through it, occasionally making faces.]

He only finally leaves Room 7 in the late afternoon. There are, unsurprisingly, new areas to check out, and so he does. He raids the convenience store for snacks. He browses the gates, though there's nothing there he wants to see. The whole time, Ruri and Son of Ruri orbit his feet. Neither of them have knives. That probably means Junpei still has one.
Oddly, he stops by the art room for a while. Most of that time, he's just sitting in a chair with his arms folded, staring off at the wall, waiting for something to dry.
A little after dinnertime, he stops by Room 4 to leave a paperback novel with the cover painted white at Yuuri's memorial. Inside, most of the pages have been entirely blacked out, but there are a few that are different.
Some have poetry.
There's a slim piece of cardstock like a bookmark at one of the poems. On it, in Junpei's clear handwriting, is a note.
Couldn't figure out how to make it a White Day present until now.

So, welcome to the Bar 'n' Grill, where your princess has provided... burgers! They're a little on the bland side (she was nervous about going overboard with the spices), but surprisingly good. She's also brought in a whole pile of prepackaged snacks from the convenience store, for those of you who (understandably) won't eat food you didn't prepare yourselves.]
Good afternoon, everyone. I felt it best that we get together and discuss our situation. [Y'know, before everything goes to hell again.] Much has changed since we last held a proper meeting, and we must determine where we should focus our efforts.
In particular, I believe it would be prudent to discuss Sir PAL and Sir Aiden Price. Both of them are individuals with whom some of our number have prior experience.

[PAL is waiting for them at the information desk, decked out in the beefy robot body he debuted at the trial. He’s leaning back against it leisurely, almost on several buttons but not quite.]
Good afternoon, Champions. You’re all very keen on playing with dead things since I last saw you, aren’t you? A shame Diver isn’t around anymore to help. She was very good at that. But let’s get to why we’re all here.
If a Champion doesn’t execute Rule 7 by the end of the week all memories of your dead friends will be locked away. [He leans back farther, hitting a button and causing a screech of feedback from somewhere in the spaceport.] And just to take sure you know we’re serious...let’s get started, shall we?

You'd be forgiven for thinking her holing up in the Bar 'n Grill and cooking is done out of peppy, chipper energy, but then again, the manic tenseness of her entire body sends a very clear signal that Jane is afraid. Afraid of how far PAL's reach could go, afraid of who she could wake up losing tomorrow, afraid of being torn from the purpose that she was only beginning to unearth within herself again. She cooks in here most of the day, and if you want some of whatever she makes, she won't stop you - in fact, it'd probably help with her mood to show that you trust her right now. But you're not obligated to eat her food.
It's in the evening, in both Concourses, where the food's purpose is apparent. For each person, Jane sets up a little memorial of sorts, putting a bowl of the various things she's cooked out for everyone who is gone. Even when she gets to the Concourse of her own group and lingers at the desks with their names blackened out, their pictures gone, she leaves something.
