Week 2

[The second week in the Champion Excellence Program kicks off on a somber note. Chitanda, Toby, the Griffin- all three of them gone, two of them in one fell swoop. If anyone thinks to check the profiles on their P.I.P.s they will find that the dearly departed Champions' profile photos have been greyed out.

Right on the dot at 7 am the mechanical woman's voice chimes to awaken the remaining champions on Sunday morning, as she has for the past week. After the initial wake-up call though there's a new message tacked on:]

Congratulations, Champions! By surviving your first trial, you have unlocked the second floor of the ship. A new mini map has been added to your P.I.P.! To access the second floor please stand on the teleporter and select the floor you wish to be teleported to.

[The new floor isn't the only thing floating around the ship though, at least metaphorically. When the Champions are awakened they have regained one new memory from the ones they've lost. Starting again on Sunday, as well, Jamie and Bolton will be back to their usual office hours in their usual locations.]

I've met a couple but he's definitely up there. Probably even more than Margulis. [Beat.] Though, he's got competition.

I said him. Margulis, though Togami is close behind. [Yeah. Screw both them.]

Ooh. Sorry, I guess I haven't spoken enough to Mister Margulis enough to pick up on that.

[But if he's really worse than Togami, does she want to try talking to him? Eeugh...]

I really don't know how boys like that don't get the sense smacked into them by our age...

He lectured on and on about how worthless most people are. Togami's a jerk but at least I think he's pretty much harmless.

[Because everyone knows he's a jerk and can jump him.]

I don't either. God, I've forgotten that boys are such idiots.

Oh, now I'm glad I missed out on that.

[Or possibly tuned it out - after all, she was whispering with Lightning about stealing and hiding Seth's creepy paintings.]

Do you not have a lot of boys around back home?

You got lucky. He said something about how they don't have diverse talents. I remarked that he really didn't have a foot to stand on since he's the champion of something close to someone else. It just got him ranting.

[Probably turned it out. For the best, really.]

Everyone in the club was a girl, so. I just kind of got used to being around other girls.

[A sigh and a roll of the eyes. Men really never change, do they?]

That sounds nice, though. I mean, if you're always around friends, you always have people you can rely on.

[He said it better than she could but... God. She laughs a little.]

Yeah... I mean. I wish we got to see other people a bit more but I wouldn't trade 'em for anything.

Oh? Is your club tricky to get into?

Golly, well, I hope it's more alike to just...you know, silly tests of worthiness and not like hazing or anything.

Well...more like there just wasn't a lot of people available to join.

Well, your club is made of those friends of yours, right? So you all must be close. And to get to interact in person so much...that's got to be really nice. All of my friends are limited to the internet.

I mean, I won't say that we're not close. It's just... Well. What do you think a School Living Club does?

Well...I suppose you'd be in charge of a lot of little things that make the student body's life at school a bit easier. Helping redirect hallway traffic in the event of renovations, making sure folks do their part keeping things clean, that sort of stuff.

Honestly? I wish it was like that. A teacher made it up when... I don't know if you'll believe me but I told a few people already.

[She takes a breath.]

She made it up so we could keep our wits after the zombies came since we were stuck in the school.

[Before the revelation's dropped?] Golly, after this place? Try me.

[And then, after it...]

The zombie apocalypse happened. [There is no easy way to put that.]

[She's just. Going to sit down on the floor of the shower and pat the floor gently for Kurumi to sit with her.]

I think...you're going to have to try explaining it to me from the start. I-I believe you, but...um...that sort of thing demands context.

I can't really give you much other than I experienced. It was probably a terrorist attack or something but it was just a normal day. We all went to school. I had practice with the track team after school. There were news reports of riots but no one thought anything of it other than it being weird. In the middle of practice, though...

[Yeah. It.]

Things got crazy and I just ran to the roof to get away. Two other students were up there and a teacher, too. It happened so fast.

[That's...really terrifying, actually. And the way Kurumi talks about it...]

How long ago did it happen, for you?

A few months. Nearly a year now, I think.

[cyan_maid]

[...Yeah, that makes sense. No wonder Kurumi's numb to it.]

...I'm sorry. None of that should have happened, it...it can't be easy.

[What do you even say? Sorry the zombie apocalypse happened to your homeworld?]

You and your friends...you've been keeping yourself safe in the school all this time?

No...you don't have to be sorry. It's just. It's like a flood or earthquake, it's no one's fault.

[Except the people who made it but she couldn't find them.]

We were, yeah. We found Miki on a trip outside the school but.. Well. We had to leave it about a week or so before I woke up here. Now it's just the four of us.
