Week 2

[The second week in the Champion Excellence Program kicks off on a somber note. Chitanda, Toby, the Griffin- all three of them gone, two of them in one fell swoop. If anyone thinks to check the profiles on their P.I.P.s they will find that the dearly departed Champions' profile photos have been greyed out.

Right on the dot at 7 am the mechanical woman's voice chimes to awaken the remaining champions on Sunday morning, as she has for the past week. After the initial wake-up call though there's a new message tacked on:]

Congratulations, Champions! By surviving your first trial, you have unlocked the second floor of the ship. A new mini map has been added to your P.I.P.! To access the second floor please stand on the teleporter and select the floor you wish to be teleported to.

[The new floor isn't the only thing floating around the ship though, at least metaphorically. When the Champions are awakened they have regained one new memory from the ones they've lost. Starting again on Sunday, as well, Jamie and Bolton will be back to their usual office hours in their usual locations.]

The conference rooms should be clear by now, would one of those be suitable?

[Because no way is he going to suggest talking in their quarters with people already having ideas.]

That may be the best we can get. If anyone is around, I should be able to evade detection.

And they offer a measure of privacy even if someone else is in the library, although the door will unlock after three hours.

[As he found out this morning...]

Shouldn't need even that long. I just don't want to risk others hearing this, especially with their impressions of us now.

I have a feeling they'll think what they want to regardless. Public impression is a difficult thing to manage.

Yurika especially. Had better get this thing to shut up already. So I'll meet you in say a half an hour?

[misplacedxsheath]

That sounds reasonable.

[He heads for the exit, but stops at the door and turns to smirk.]

Just try not to track drain filth into the library.

As if you can expect more than the bare minimum to shut this thing up.

[Still, once Margulis leaves he'll go ahead and make some effort to clean and shut the thing up. Then he'll grab a quick shower of his own. Once done, he'll head to the library and go into the conference room as quickly and quietly as he can. Thankfully he has training in stealth and when he decides to exert effort at it, he is very good at evading detection.]

[Margulis is waiting there with a plate of breaded chicken and a bottled drink, apparently from the diner. Rather than sitting in any of the chairs, he's chosen to lean back and half sit on the edge of the desk.]

[Once McBurn arrives, he'll end up sitting in a similar fashion, though closer to the food. His hair is still a bit wet from that shower, but not to the point of dripping. He did take the time to put his hair back after showering as well and put back in the improvised earring. And of course his PIP finally shut up, so all is good now. He'll take a quick swig of the drink.]

Seriously appreciate this. It's so obvious that Bolton is trying to push me towards either attacking him or becoming the next culprit.

[He envies the fact that your hair is long enough to just tie back. His is still hanging loose because apparently styling products aren't worth leaving around.]

You've been nothing but difficult toward him, so it's no surprise he's eager to get rid of you.

He's also been nothing but annoying. [He takes a bite of the chicken now.]

Very eager and that means he must know a lot more about what I am than I thought. If I'm going to commit murder, I'd prefer it to be because I personally chose to stop holding back against a worthy opponent. He's trying to cause that by toying with me.

[Still, so far McBurn is doing a tolerable job keeping himself under control. The lazy act works quite well to keep him apathetic and unable to lose control and change into a demon. But he's getting the idea that if things keep up as they are, he won't be able to keep it up.]

I suspect he knows a lot about all of us. Provoking a reaction from a fire user is risky, as it ordinarily only takes one impulsive action, but I wouldn't be surprised if he has defenses if his own.

It's more risky when I could lose control and become a being that is sadistic and destructive and doesn't care who dies.

Ah, that problem. Yes, that sort of possibility complicates matters even without adding in innate elemental abilities.

[almightyconflagration]

Innate elemental abilities that get even stronger when I change. It's something I rarely do because few can handle it. Still, I'd like to know at least one person would stop me from doing something I'll regret if I lose control of myself. I'd prefer it not to come to that, but it seems someone has an interest in seeing it happen.

You needn't be concerned, I'm not afraid to go toe to toe with an out of control warrior, even one with superhuman capabilities. I'm well trained in subdual techniques as well...including ones that work on the masochistic sort.

If it happens, don't worry too much about hurting me. On top of enjoying pain, I also heal quickly.

No wonder you and he share so many traits. I'll keep that in mind the next time I need to keep you from falling asleep out of boredom.

Just don't get yourself punished again.

I barely even felt their last attempt, but if they're getting more creative...well, I suppose I'll just have to be preemptive in my attempts to keep you awake, so they can't claim I'm doing their job in waking you up.

I'm just not fond of lengthy conversations that seem to go nowhere. I'm sure you'd also understand that being too knowledgeable on the subject of murder could quickly turn me into a suspect.

That's the exact reason I didn't bring up my own knife throwing expertise. Not that I'd ever attempt to use something as poorly weighted as those kitchen knives as a projectile, you'd be more likely to hit someone with the handle than stab them by throwing something like that.

That's also why few here have seen how much fire I can will into existence. They all get scared over a tiny ball of fire.

I know, it's pathetic. Not to mention insulting, to act as if they think I'd hit anything but my intended target.

[A ball of fire appears above his hand, perfectly spherical, as if contained in a bubble. The motion of the flames, however, suggests it's more because they're focused entirely toward the center]

They don't call me an Ether master because of sloppy control.
