Week 2

[The second week in the Champion Excellence Program kicks off on a somber note. Chitanda, Toby, the Griffin- all three of them gone, two of them in one fell swoop. If anyone thinks to check the profiles on their P.I.P.s they will find that the dearly departed Champions' profile photos have been greyed out.

Right on the dot at 7 am the mechanical woman's voice chimes to awaken the remaining champions on Sunday morning, as she has for the past week. After the initial wake-up call though there's a new message tacked on:]

Congratulations, Champions! By surviving your first trial, you have unlocked the second floor of the ship. A new mini map has been added to your P.I.P.! To access the second floor please stand on the teleporter and select the floor you wish to be teleported to.

[The new floor isn't the only thing floating around the ship though, at least metaphorically. When the Champions are awakened they have regained one new memory from the ones they've lost. Starting again on Sunday, as well, Jamie and Bolton will be back to their usual office hours in their usual locations.]

I had a...remembrance, as well. But that seems to be a consensus among us.

More pressingly, I wanted to ask if any of you would be on board with some sort of funeral service for Chitanda and the others. [ Although she only names Chitanda, her tone is surprisingly neutral. As much as she hated what Toby did, he still deserved his rites. ] Misumaru, you mentioned it to Xander, right?

I know a bit about human last rites from my duties, but if anyone could share theirs, I'd be grateful.

[He's not sure he wants to admit to knowing nada about any kind of funeral rituals.] Your duties as a...soul reaper?

[The tone of his question seems to suggest WHAT DOES THAT EVEN MEAN PLZ ELABORATE.]

Yes. Soul Reapers guide souls to the afterlife and cleanse malevolent spirits. It's our job.

I've the most experience with wandering souls, but a few have stuck around for their own funerals.

[He's probably heard of the concept of souls, at least...] So it's all real, where you come from. They're actual and tangible. But that's not something you can do here?

No. I can't sense any spiritual pressure at all. It's strange.

Another ability hindered by being here, somehow.

Natsuhi and I had wanted to...leave the paper cranes with her body. It seemed important to the culture in a way. I don't know what we want to do with them now, though. Leave them in her room?

A few of us started to draw something on an art paper roll. Not Twiright-san's idea of a warning, that needs to go.

...no, of course not. [ said with a clear tone of disgust SHE ALREADY DOES NOT LIKE HIM, WHAT RECORD TIMING. ]

What were your ideas?

Aside from that, I do know a lot of different funeral rites... just please don't ask me to do all of them. We did have that tea meeting after the trial, maybe we could say a few words...

I don't mind helping you out. Just let me know. [ she'll be your co-priest

Rukia nods. ]

We seem to be lacking in basic tools like prayer beads, and familial donations are a bit moot, so that may be the best we can manage.

It's also customary to burn items that the deceased was fond of, like candy, so if we can find anything that's disposable, we could do that, too. [ She's not saying they should ignite Chitanda's book, she means. ]

We could check their dumbwaiters? I got a ton of things in mine!

It may not be what she might have had at home, but for the Griffin, perchance... we clean the body and clothe it in a winding-sheet. We place rosemary in the grave, if we have it, for remembrance. And perhaps say a few words. It is simple. [ and! not! Anglican! ] But without any chance of burial, 'tis of little virtue.

[ Rukia smiles just a little bit, and flips to another page in her sketchpad, writing it down. ]

Thanks. [ ... ] I don't know if they can see us now, but sometimes the ceremonies themselves can work wonders for souls. Every little bit counts.

[curdle]

Forgive me my distraction. [ She means it more like confusion. ] You saith...

[ It's total blasphemy, but she doesn't actually sound reproving or negative in any way, except for the twinge of fear in her voice. ]

You think their souls may be here still?

Well, that's the problem--I don't know if they are. [ She frowns. ] I'd usually be able to tell, but I can't.

My, er-- [ how to put this in a way Thomasin might understand better? ] ...sixth sense has been removed.

We all wear black, and apologize for all the shitty things we said about them behind their backs.

I'm not sure the majority of us did that.

I was... going to make an offering for Chitanda. I'm not sure what to do for the others though...

Well, if you didn't interact with them, there's not much you can do, right? Showing up may just fit the bill.

[ like, who's gonna force themselves to say nice things about a stranger, even if it is their funeral ]

It's more that we don't have a suitable offering for them here...

That's mainly what I meant. We don't have much to choose from, here, save for anyone who got things from their dumbwaiter.

[She wished they could at least give her body a proper sendoff, but-]

Funerals are...mm, I haven't really been to any, but I've seen enough on television. You wear black, and have the...deceased in a casket, and you talk about the good times you had with them, and then they're buried. There's obviously not a lot of that we can do here, but maybe...a memorial service might not be too outlandish. And...to make something to represent her presence that's...kinder than some other depictions.

[She doesn't need to be reminded of how fucked up their situation is, SETH.]

[ Rukia forces a tight smile onto her face in sympathy. ]

If you have any ideas, I'm listening. Otherwise, there's not a whole lot of things we can do with our limited resources. [ SUN LAMPS

She listens, and then nods when Jane is done. ]

That doesn't sound too far off from what I'm used to.

Acquiring it might be difficult...and I'm not about to ask Twiright to draw another one.
