Week 2

[The second week in the Champion Excellence Program kicks off on a somber note. Chitanda, Toby, the Griffin- all three of them gone, two of them in one fell swoop. If anyone thinks to check the profiles on their P.I.P.s they will find that the dearly departed Champions' profile photos have been greyed out.

Right on the dot at 7 am the mechanical woman's voice chimes to awaken the remaining champions on Sunday morning, as she has for the past week. After the initial wake-up call though there's a new message tacked on:]

Congratulations, Champions! By surviving your first trial, you have unlocked the second floor of the ship. A new mini map has been added to your P.I.P.! To access the second floor please stand on the teleporter and select the floor you wish to be teleported to.

[The new floor isn't the only thing floating around the ship though, at least metaphorically. When the Champions are awakened they have regained one new memory from the ones they've lost. Starting again on Sunday, as well, Jamie and Bolton will be back to their usual office hours in their usual locations.]

Hoo hoo! Miss Yurika, there's a movie that came out a couple of years ago that calls such cones "the cone of shame" - how could I not do it?

That's amazing! Maybe he'll think twice before making everyone so upset. I wonder who else he annoyed enough to give him all that stuff?

I don't know, but I wish I'd been able to give him that god-awful Baby Alive! A shame he didn't put up with it being on...see, if I'd gotten something like that, you want to know what I'd do? [Her grin is absolutely devious.] Play along so hard with it to scare the Overseers!

[giggle fit] You might freak everybody else out too, though!

Oh, that's not any trouble. It'd be a big joke, Miss Yurika - the ultimate prank! You thought you were going to inconvenience me, but guess what? I won't back down!

You really like messing around with people, don't you?

Just in the ways that don't cause any harm. My Poppop was always fabulous at practical jokes, like his father before him, and my Dad. It's just another little bit of tradition for us.

Your family must all be really close. I wish I had that kind of thing in common with my dad. I guess we're both good at tactics and managing people, but he's so embarrassing.

Oh golly, well, my Poppop passed away when I was born, and my Dad and I have had our rough patches, but we do get along much better nowadays. [Still, she smiles at the embarrassing part.] Did your Dad ever try to turn himself into something you love in order to get you to think he was cool?

No, but he did tell his entire platoon that he was so proud that I was growing up when he found my shopping bags from the lingerie store. I wanted to hide for a year.

[Jaw dropping immediately.]

What the - why would he do that?? That's awful!

I don't know, but it was humiliating. I'm grown up now and he's still weird. At least I don't have to deal with it in space.

That's definitely more than just humiliating, Miss Yurika!!

[THANK GOD HER DAD WOULD NEVER DO THAT IN PUBLIC, he'd just quietly hand her a goofy note that she could keep to herself.]

Your family sounds a lot more fun. At least, weird in a more fun way.

[He's the kind of guy who's happy to Dad everyone and not be a creepy pervert.]

That sounds great! I'd like to let all of you meet my crew, too, though Prospector-san will probably complain about the expense.

I won't be a bother, I promise - do tell this Prospector that I can pay for my own fare and everything.

[Are you sure Jane. Are you really sure. Boonbucks aren't legal currency after all.]

I'll see what I can do! He's just a little obsessed with keeping us under budget, that's all.

Is he your ship's bookkeeper?

Yes, he's in charge of that kind of thing. He gets a little... well, he takes his job very seriously!

I'm guessing it's a very large job, though. I can't imagine what sort of expenses go into maintaining a ship...

The Nadesico is pretty big, so a lot. But it does get a little annoying.

How so? I wouldn't mind hearing about it if you wanted to vent a little.

I just think that things like the mission and keeping people happy matter a little bit more, you know?

That's a very noble way to think about it, Miss Yurika.
