Week 2

[The second week in the Champion Excellence Program kicks off on a somber note. Chitanda, Toby, the Griffin- all three of them gone, two of them in one fell swoop. If anyone thinks to check the profiles on their P.I.P.s they will find that the dearly departed Champions' profile photos have been greyed out.

Right on the dot at 7 am the mechanical woman's voice chimes to awaken the remaining champions on Sunday morning, as she has for the past week. After the initial wake-up call though there's a new message tacked on:]

Congratulations, Champions! By surviving your first trial, you have unlocked the second floor of the ship. A new mini map has been added to your P.I.P.! To access the second floor please stand on the teleporter and select the floor you wish to be teleported to.

[The new floor isn't the only thing floating around the ship though, at least metaphorically. When the Champions are awakened they have regained one new memory from the ones they've lost. Starting again on Sunday, as well, Jamie and Bolton will be back to their usual office hours in their usual locations.]

That makes sense, but it doesn't make anything easier.

If everything were easy, we'd all be home by now. The best we can do is to hold on to the determination to escape by our own rules, and the belief that the Overseers' hold on us won't last forever.

That's true. We can get out of here! Now all we need to do is spread that cheer to the rest of the Champions!

I find it best to lead in such things by example. Show no doubt, and others will share in your resolve.

Don't worry! I can be as positive as they need!

It's not merely about positivity. Acknowledging the difficulties, in fact, will be necessary. True resolve is the ability to persevere in the face of threats and hardships. To carry one's goal in mind even when victory seems far from reach.

I'm sure I can do it. No matter what happens. So don't worry, alright? I won't stay down for long.

I'm not worried about that. With you, I'm more concerned that you'll take something too lightly and underestimate the dangers and difficulty involved.

I'm not going to, no matter what it might look like to everyone else. I try to have a lot of fun and be positive, but I don't really see anything wrong with that. As long as I can still get results, right?

I just don't want you to be too surprised by the harshness of reality.

I already know how bad it can get, even if it doesn't look like I do. That's what makes me so determined to make things better than they are, Margulis-san. Even if it can't work out all the time, the most important thing is not to give up just because of that!

[misplacedxsheath]

[His reaction isn't immediate, but the smile he gives is, without doubt, the most genuine he's shown since his arrival...but even so, it's tinged with some amount of bitterness.]

A pity we're from different universes. Mine...could use more individuals of that outlook.

Maybe you just haven't found them! Even one colony has more people than one person in it knows, much less a planet or a system, right?

It's certainly not without them entirely...they're merely far too rare, in a universe plagued by complacency and willful delusion.
