Week 2

[The second week in the Champion Excellence Program kicks off on a somber note. Chitanda, Toby, the Griffin- all three of them gone, two of them in one fell swoop. If anyone thinks to check the profiles on their P.I.P.s they will find that the dearly departed Champions' profile photos have been greyed out.

Right on the dot at 7 am the mechanical woman's voice chimes to awaken the remaining champions on Sunday morning, as she has for the past week. After the initial wake-up call though there's a new message tacked on:]

Congratulations, Champions! By surviving your first trial, you have unlocked the second floor of the ship. A new mini map has been added to your P.I.P.! To access the second floor please stand on the teleporter and select the floor you wish to be teleported to.

[The new floor isn't the only thing floating around the ship though, at least metaphorically. When the Champions are awakened they have regained one new memory from the ones they've lost. Starting again on Sunday, as well, Jamie and Bolton will be back to their usual office hours in their usual locations.]

You can have it if you want! It's good to be reminded of home. Did you get anything you wanted to trade around?

[She nods, something almost like a smile on her lips.]

Thanks. And not really. Only nailpolish and a few other useless items.

I got the nail polish, too! Doesn't it look cool? It reminds me of when my IFS implant appears on my hand and there's kind of a shine to it before it turns grey!

I'm not a makeup kind of girl. Do you want it?

Of course! If you don't want it, it'll be of better use with me! Though now I have to think. Does nail polish count as makeup? It doesn't go on your face...

It does to me. It enhances your appearance and isn't clothes.

[ratherdoweddings]

What about perfume? It doesn't change how you look, but you use it for something similar.

[bylight]

Smell and appearance don't always go hand in hand. You could be the most beautiful person in the room, but smell awful. You can't escape scent, just mask it. And you could do it in ways that aren't perfume or obvious.

There are sure a lot of rules about this.

[bylight]

Rules? Not really. You can get killed for smelling like something that stands out against what the rest of the place smells like. Makeup isn't that important.

[ratherdoweddings]

Are you sure that's people? I think it's bears.

[bylight]

Yes. I'm sure. Humans and animals are both attuned to smells that aren't supposed to be there. Like perfume in a forest. That's not natural.

[ratherdoweddings]

But humans won't usually kill you for smelling bad, right?

[bylight]

[She sighs.] Imagine you are trying to sneak around an enemy base. It's a carport where the smell of fuels and metal are the biggest thing. You decide to wear perfume. How long do you think you'll be able to stay hidden before they find and kill you. It's the same way with smelling bad. You're giving yourself away. In a civilian situation you might not die, but you will definitely find yourself ostracized in some way.

Being serious has kept me alive this long. I'll stick to my guns.

Well, I'll keep it in mind, but...

[She's just going to give you a stern look. Not everyone can be as happy and lucky as you, Yurika.]
