Week 2

[The second week in the Champion Excellence Program kicks off on a somber note. Chitanda, Toby, the Griffin- all three of them gone, two of them in one fell swoop. If anyone thinks to check the profiles on their P.I.P.s they will find that the dearly departed Champions' profile photos have been greyed out.

Right on the dot at 7 am the mechanical woman's voice chimes to awaken the remaining champions on Sunday morning, as she has for the past week. After the initial wake-up call though there's a new message tacked on:]

Congratulations, Champions! By surviving your first trial, you have unlocked the second floor of the ship. A new mini map has been added to your P.I.P.! To access the second floor please stand on the teleporter and select the floor you wish to be teleported to.

[The new floor isn't the only thing floating around the ship though, at least metaphorically. When the Champions are awakened they have regained one new memory from the ones they've lost. Starting again on Sunday, as well, Jamie and Bolton will be back to their usual office hours in their usual locations.]

There's nothing to talk about. What's done is done.

[She isn't adverse to discussing it, really, but... She doesn't see the point in doing so.]

For "nothing," it sure sounds important.

[...yeah, Ricky's not interested in evasiveness right now.]

Don't misunderstand. It isn't insignificant. Nonetheless, it's useless to talk about it now.

It isn't useless for people to understand what's wrong.

[She looks up from her bowl to Ricky's face, expression blank and head tilted.]

If you would like to know, I will tell you.

I want to know.

[The slight edge her voice had picked up is gone now. What she really wants is to help, if she can.]

[decarded]

There isn't much to say. [She looks back down to her ice cream.] I failed, and was discarded.

[Ouch.]

When you say "discarded..."

I was left for dead.

[She isn't going to pretty it up.]

[voltrounds]

That's terrible.

[Who the hell would leave someone awesome like Angelica behind?]

Perhaps. As I said, what's done is done.

...so what are you going to do?

[decarded]

I don't know. It doesn't matter anymore, I suppose. I am a doll without purpose.

[voltrounds]

Of course it matters! You can't just give up on yourself!

[decarded]

[...sigh]

I have always served my family. I know no other way to live.

[voltrounds]

That's... that happens to a lot of people, though. Even I don't know what I'm going to do after I finish with my mission.

[decarded]

Perhaps, but there's still a future ahead of you. I cannot say the same for myself.

[voltrounds]

Then--you can share mine!

[decarded]

I—

What do you mean?

[voltrounds]

[Okay she actually just kind of blurted that out but okay she's figuring this out.]

When we get out of here, just... don't go back. Come with me, instead.

[decarded]

...I don't know if that's possible. I—

[She's actually a bit taken aback, and it takes her a moment to collect herself.]

My world is dying. It would be irresponsible to abandon it.

[Which is...at least part of what she meant, about not having a future.]

Then... that can be your purpose, right? Finding a way to save your world?

[Hm...]

Or maybe you can do both. My world was dying, too. Maybe it has the answers you'll need.

It always has been. My family has been searching for a way to fix things for years.

[Even if she was discarded, she can't help that feeling of responsibility. Especially not with everything her brother had struggled through—]

...What happened, to yours?

...we didn't take good care of it. We completely ruined Earth's environment. It took a thousand years to repair the damage we'd done, and even that had dangerous consequences.

[Sigh.]
