Week 2

[The second week in the Champion Excellence Program kicks off on a somber note. Chitanda, Toby, the Griffin- all three of them gone, two of them in one fell swoop. If anyone thinks to check the profiles on their P.I.P.s they will find that the dearly departed Champions' profile photos have been greyed out.

Right on the dot at 7 am the mechanical woman's voice chimes to awaken the remaining champions on Sunday morning, as she has for the past week. After the initial wake-up call though there's a new message tacked on:]

Congratulations, Champions! By surviving your first trial, you have unlocked the second floor of the ship. A new mini map has been added to your P.I.P.! To access the second floor please stand on the teleporter and select the floor you wish to be teleported to.

[The new floor isn't the only thing floating around the ship though, at least metaphorically. When the Champions are awakened they have regained one new memory from the ones they've lost. Starting again on Sunday, as well, Jamie and Bolton will be back to their usual office hours in their usual locations.]

It's definitely not cheating! Mister Jamie said there'd be an ice cream bar for the winners, and the diner doesn't have that - they just happen to have ice cream.

Well, you are right! I wonder why they gave us a fun thing like that instead of a motive, though. I mean, the real reason.

Well, maybe Mister Jamie was telling the truth when he said he doesn't want us to kill each other. Even if he's part of the upper echelon of this terrible place, I'd like to think he was being sincere.

[Even if that means he'd prefer they all live on this space station in peace forever, which, you know, is also unacceptable.]

I hope so. I just remember talking to him last week about the motive before this one. He said something like... "The motive doesn't have to work for everyone. It just has to work for someone." And then gave the example of someone's regret being dropping their ice cream cone when they were a kid.

Mm...he did say to me that he and Mister Bolton are the ones coming up with these. I suppose...if it's going to be something cruel, then it doesn't have to hit a nerve with everyone. If you have that one thing out of place, it could spell disaster for everyone else.

So they hit us with something that could hurt almost everyone one week, then something for nobody the next, and see what we do.

Or they just cross their fingers that we'll go stir-crazy.

[A sigh, a shake of the head. This is so ridiculous.]

Do you think we already are?

Stir-crazy? Goodness, I...I think I can only speak for myself. Back home, I only had my Dad and Lil' Sebastian for personal company. All the friends I had, I could only speak to through the internet. So...no matter all our different personalities, just having other people around is keeping me from getting any sort of space cabin fever. What about you?

Oh, don't worry about me! I've been on the same ship for months, after all! Though it was a lot bigger than this, with more people.

[Right...yeah, she...pilots a spaceship.]

So you're sort of used to this kind of situation, then - it'd be much harder to get to you that way.

That's true! Even if I do miss home a lot, especially now that I know Akito and I finally got together.

...What is Akito like, anyway? You mention him a lot, but...well, he's a gentleman, I hope?

Oh, he was always there for me when we were kids. Even when he got embarrassed and said I had girl cooties, I knew he didn't mean it! When we met again as adults, he followed me all the way to Nergal to give back my photo, and he even signed onto the Nadesico!

And what sort of work does he do on your ship? Do the both of you get to work together often?

He's a cook, but since he's got an IFS implant, he's also a backup pilot! We've got four main ones, but Akito ends up out there a lot anyway. He says he doesn't want to fight, but when he does, he does his best to protect us all. Isn't that how everyone should be?

It is, ideally. I certainly hope he's a good cook, though.

[A man that can cook? Holy shit, girl, you hit the jackpot.]

Amazing! All of our cooks are. Howmei-san works hard to make sure everyone gets everything they need!

Oh, that's good to hear! And the fact that you two have known each other for so long...golly, I'm a touch envious, I hope you don't mind, but it's the good kind.

It really is amazing, isn't it? It's making me miss home now, though...

Well, at least you'll have something really nice to look forward to once we get out of here.

Ahah, well, perhaps you've been helping me keep my spirits up - you're incredibly positive yourself!

I only do my best for everyone! Margulis-san was saying something like that the other day. I think he thought I don't know how serious things get, but I don't think it's wrong to be positive even when you know sometimes things won't work out that way.

Does he really think so? That's...well, it seems silly to me. You were able to take charge when things got so tense...if someone doesn't understand how serious things are, how would they even begin to do something like that?
