Week 2

[The second week in the Champion Excellence Program kicks off on a somber note. Chitanda, Toby, the Griffin- all three of them gone, two of them in one fell swoop. If anyone thinks to check the profiles on their P.I.P.s they will find that the dearly departed Champions' profile photos have been greyed out.

Right on the dot at 7 am the mechanical woman's voice chimes to awaken the remaining champions on Sunday morning, as she has for the past week. After the initial wake-up call though there's a new message tacked on:]

Congratulations, Champions! By surviving your first trial, you have unlocked the second floor of the ship. A new mini map has been added to your P.I.P.! To access the second floor please stand on the teleporter and select the floor you wish to be teleported to.

[The new floor isn't the only thing floating around the ship though, at least metaphorically. When the Champions are awakened they have regained one new memory from the ones they've lost. Starting again on Sunday, as well, Jamie and Bolton will be back to their usual office hours in their usual locations.]

That, yes. But I would be concerned with what else would go out. If the gravity goes, it could be an isolated incident, one system that needs maintenance, but given the amount of money and resources going into this place, I'd worry about other systems failing as well.

Which could give us an opportunity to find a way out, rather than fighting each other.

[If the systems fail...]

We'd have to rush. There'd only be a finite oxygen supply, and with a hothead like McBurn, one wrong word and he'd set this place on fire... There's a lot of risk, and we might have to intentionally leave some people behind for the safety of everyone else.... unless we can guarantee no infighting.

[Now that...is an interesting perspective he didn't think he'd hear from Lightning. He pushes gently, a slow float up while contemplating.]

I assume you have certain names in mind already. Though if everyone wants to escape, one would hope that everyone could work together long enough for that.

[She knows sacrifice at times is absolutely necessary.]

Yes, though I have a feeling my list will change the longer we're here. Especially if more people die. [She sighs softly.] Selfishness can keep that from happening.

That's practical. I wouldn't spread that around, though. In case certain parties take offense.

But you're right. Some people can be surprising when you get to know them better, or under the right circumstances. Or the wrong. And if, when more people die, when the number of people to be relied on shrinks...then who knows what will happen.

Sometimes you have to be for survival.

[Oh, she has talked to some people that looked like they were useless, but turned out not to be so.] I'm more worried about someone cracking under the pressure.

It'd be a concern even without murder hanging over our heads. Not everyone's cut out to suddenly live in a space station with eccentric strangers.

I'm even worried about the ones that are used to space.

The situation is...unusual. [It's said with a small chuckle, knowing that that's the understatement of the year for certain.] Even for those used to space stations and eccentric strangers, granted. You can't predict anyone's reactions.

[She can't even in all honesty fully trust Yurika. She'll trust people enough not to end her life.]

That's why we need to keep people calm.

And what would you have done with those who can't keep their calm? Would they be left behind?

No. [She raises her fist.] I'll knock some sense into them.
