Week 2

[The second week in the Champion Excellence Program kicks off on a somber note. Chitanda, Toby, the Griffin- all three of them gone, two of them in one fell swoop. If anyone thinks to check the profiles on their P.I.P.s they will find that the dearly departed Champions' profile photos have been greyed out.

Right on the dot at 7 am the mechanical woman's voice chimes to awaken the remaining champions on Sunday morning, as she has for the past week. After the initial wake-up call though there's a new message tacked on:]

Congratulations, Champions! By surviving your first trial, you have unlocked the second floor of the ship. A new mini map has been added to your P.I.P.! To access the second floor please stand on the teleporter and select the floor you wish to be teleported to.

[The new floor isn't the only thing floating around the ship though, at least metaphorically. When the Champions are awakened they have regained one new memory from the ones they've lost. Starting again on Sunday, as well, Jamie and Bolton will be back to their usual office hours in their usual locations.]

It's not that I don't trust him, I just don't like him. He's awful.

Is't just what he saith at meeting?

[ Yurika is very demonstrative of her feelings, to be fair. ]

That and his... "art." He says he's going to hang it up tomorrow, which I hope he doesn't. But most of all, he seems to think all of us dying is both inevitable and interesting to watch.

[curdle]

His art...?

[ She hasn't been in the art room, or any room on the first floor besides the cafeteria, because she only goes there to sew! And as such has been spared the sight of it for the grand total of... less than a day. ]

I cannot trust him, but I think it pleases him to hear such things.

You mean he likes being disliked?

[curdle]

Or his words taking hold. 'Tis power, of a sort.

[ She knows how cathartic it was to make Mercy finally fear her, after all. ]

Power in people hating him for what he does... I don't really get it, but it makes as much sense as anything. It means he gets to control how people feel, even if it's bad. Right?

[curdle]

[ Thomasin nods. ]

'Tis an empty way to live, whatever the purpose. [ And she realizes she's still got a recorder in her hand! Which she looks at quizzically, but isn't putting down. ] Thus I try not to indulge his whim.

That still sounds a little too much like saying "just ignore them" to a kid who's being bullied.

...It's a recorder! A pretty simple woodwind instrument.

[curdle]

We have them in my years too, [ she says, embarrassed that she looked clueless enough to prompt an explanation, ] though I've seen none since England.

But what can we do elsewise? He delights in the cruellest discourse. To blow into [ raising the recorder ] this should have no less effect than to argue back.

[ratherdoweddings]

Wait, do you mean we should play the recorder outside his room to annoy him?

[curdle]

I'd surely not suggest--

[ WAIT... ]

Well... I should not do such a thing with no provocation. But if he cannot be quieted with words...

[ratherdoweddings]

Maybe if he does something again!

[curdle]

Mayhaps. [ She raises the recorder to her lips and blows in lightly, which she stops very quickly afterwards. ] Or not. Whose idea ever was it to give of them to children? If the twins got their hands on these...

[ Well, she would probably physically throw them into the brook. ]

I'm not sure, but as long as they're having fun, right? Being loud and annoying is probably better than other things! I know when I was a kid, I got into a construction site and started playing around once... They blamed poor Akito, though, when all he was trying to do was help!

[curdle]

What was his punishment for that?

[ratherdoweddings]

I remember the grownups hit him and yelled at him, so I cried. After that, he said he was tired of feeling helpless, and he became really dedicated... I guess that's why he got an IFS implant so he could actually operate those construction machines, too! Although on Earth, only pilots use them.

[curdle]

Um...

[ Yurika u have to know that was 95% word salad to her ]

...Oh! An IFS implant is this.

[Yurika holds out her hand, where a marking appears with a holographic shimmer as per the image before fading into grey.]

The Image Feedback System is a nanotech-- um, to put it really simply, people who have it can operate modern heavy machinery as easily as moving their own bodies.
