Week 3

[Two weeks in, and all at once four people are dead. Chitose, Miki, Lucina, and Tsurugi - whatever the circumstances, however any of you may feel, their rooms are just as empty at the end of the week. If you check your P.I.P.s, you'll find that their pictures on the profile page have gone monochrome.

C.E.C.E.'s morning announcement comes like clockwork on Sunday. This time, though, there's an addendum to her usual message:]

Congratulations, Champions! By surviving your first trial, you have unlocked the second floor of the ship. A new mini map has been added to your P.I.P.! To access the second floor please stand on the teleporter and select the floor you wish to be teleported to.

[In addition to the new floor, the Champions will find that they've gained another memory this week.]

It's cajeta. It's like, a syrup they make in Mexico. This isn't reeeeeeally right...but it's probably kinda close?

...Wellllll, sure, I'll try it. Sweet stuff's okay once in a while, right?

...I’lllllll just give you a bit on the side. Not much of a sweet tooth?

I don't hate sweet things, I just gotta watch what I eat. Especially when I'm not, you know, running for my life as much as usual.

[Not just any adult man can shimmy into a pair of skinny punk girl shorts, Max. He's got a waistline to maintain.]

Heh. Gotta stay in god-fighting shape?

[Fair, fair fair fair]

That's fair. I don't usually think a lot about that stuff, I'm just built like an eternal freaky stick figure. [weird sloth arms]

Aww, lucky. It's always been like that for you?

[Tell him your secrets, sloth man.]

Yeah? I mean, I don't think "bone scarecrow" is most peoples' ideal. [He spreads his sloth arms demonstratively, look at his weird proportions.] But I've never been able to put on all that much weight. It's, like, a metabolism thing.

Still probably bad for me to eat garbage all the time, I've gotten better about that as I've gotten older. I mean, for all I know it'll give out when I hit forty and I'll gain like two hundred pounds all at once.

[Granted, Max is a weird sloth man, but then have you looked at Prompto's bicep-to-chest size ratio lately? Weird proportions are how we roll in good boy land.]

It doesn't make you feel gross, either? Eating junk, I mean. Training myself out of it sucked at first, but once I started eating better I just, like. Felt better. You know? I like salads.

Ha! Ohhhh no, that's definitely part of why I've gotten better about it. I could eat pretty much anything when I was your age, but now it screws me up. Occasional stuff is fine, but like...when I was like, nineteen or so, I wanted to see how far I could push it so I just ate ice cream all the time. Still didn't put on weight, it was weird.

[He shrugs]

Thinking about that now sort of makes me feel like I'm gonna die. So, uh, good for you getting on that health thing early.

Well, it was that or stay the awkward fat kid too shy to talk to people forever, I guess. I mean, that's how I thought back then.

.....oh.

[Man, suddenly he feels bad for having congratulated him on switching to eating healthy. Like he's reinforcing some kind of body image thing.]

I-I mean. I'm glad you're happy with yourself, but...

[As Max trails off, Prompto looks up, registers the concern, and shakes his head, looking wry and a little embarrassed.]

Oh, uh, I get what you're about to say. Don't worry. I'm not a kid anymore.

[Debatable, but okay.]

It's something I keep up now because it's part of who I am. Back then, it helped me meet people, reaching out for tips and stuff. ...And I really don't want to have to buy an entire wardrobe's worth of new pants if I go up a size.

[That and FFXV just does not fucking question itself re: this narrative and what am I supposed to do about it]

...heh, yeah, that's fair.

[Max is...not entirely satisfied by this explanation. But, um, maybe it's not really worth pursuing right this second. It's not like Prompto doesn't eat. Speaking of, here is your pancake and your cajeta on the side!]

Don't try to spare my feelings, dude, you can totally go for syrup or something if you don't wanna use all that.

I wanna try! New foods are one of the few pleasures of running for your life across the map.

[Buuut, since it is a new food, he only puts it on half the pancake to start with.]

You said they make this in... Mesco?

Mexico. It's where my family's from, but I was born in America. That's where Bolton and Jamie live, too.

[And...you know literally everybody else seems to be from, like, fantasy land or Japan.]

Also where most of our movies come from for some reason?

[Or fantasy land Japan. Or fantasy JapaNewYork.]

Huh. Same with the books? Like, not that I'm hurt or anything, but most of them definitely aren't written for people from Eos.

Yeah, it's weirdly culturally specific. When we're in the minority and this is space. [shrug] Same with that diner, we should all complain.

I wonder if it means anything. Like... maybe the people who made this, they're from where you're from?

They'd still have to be from like a million years in the future if they are. And really into super-old media. Unless, like, they also got brought to space by someone?

Like time travel?

Yeah, I mean, I figure we're all in another dimension anyway. So time's kinda meaningless?

Huh. I guess I didn't even really think about that. So, you think that explains the weird, like, time discrepancy? If the cultural stuff they're showing us doesn't match up with, you know. Space.

Maybe? I don’t know if Blaze or Rox really strike me as someone from my time and place, or one like it. But it wouldn’t need to be one of them - there’s gotta be more people in on this.

Yeah, it's too big. I-it's gotta be some kind of organization.

Maybe... someone who gave them the idea. Who made what they're doing possible.
