Week 3

[Two weeks in, and all at once four people are dead. Chitose, Miki, Lucina, and Tsurugi - whatever the circumstances, however any of you may feel, their rooms are just as empty at the end of the week. If you check your P.I.P.s, you'll find that their pictures on the profile page have gone monochrome.

C.E.C.E.'s morning announcement comes like clockwork on Sunday. This time, though, there's an addendum to her usual message:]

Congratulations, Champions! By surviving your first trial, you have unlocked the second floor of the ship. A new mini map has been added to your P.I.P.! To access the second floor please stand on the teleporter and select the floor you wish to be teleported to.

[In addition to the new floor, the Champions will find that they've gained another memory this week.]

[Late in the morning there's a hesitant but firm knocking on Bolton's door.]

[dejabrew]

[He doesn't want to answer. He doesn't want to see anybody, he's not sure why nobody acknowledges that a closed door means no visitors.

But he answers, anyway, looking like every living thing inside him has been drained out. He looks like the victim of a vampire, if such a thing fed on will instead of blood.

He almost (but not quite) shuts the door in Jamie's face.]

...What?

[Jamie himself looks like he barely slept a wink last night but Bolton's everything makes him do a double take. In his hand he has a single cup of black coffee.]

He- jesus christ. [Shit. He swallows hard, mentally recalculating his words before he speaks again.] Um, hey. You weren't at breakfast so I thought I'd bring you something.

[dejabrew]

...

[He looks at the cup with a dead-eyed stare, like he's running too slow to comprehend what it is. Then he scrubs his hand through his thinning hair and looks up at Jamie wearily.]

Thanks. Guess I just don't feel hungry today.

You and a lot of other people. [He holds out the mug.] I wasn't sure how you liked it so I hope black is okay?

[dejabrew]

Black is perfect. [He reaches out and takes the mug in both hands, cradling it warm between his palms.]

I don't know if you saw but we have a diner now. Or at least the kitchen of one. [He half-grins.] Still no cherry pie yet though.

[dejabrew]

[Bolton looks. Tired. But he half-smiles back.]

I dunno if it'll be damn fine, but I could take a crack at making some.

[Bolton just Looks at him for a minute. Then he shakes his head.]

Do me a favor and be careful who you use that line on. I don't want anyone to take advantage of how much you want... pie.

I swear I meant actual pie.

[dejabrew]

[Eyebrow raise.] You're sure you don't still have your cherry...pie?

[unhappylittletrees]

...Pretty sure I'd know if I didn't. [And now he's ignoring the heat creeping up into his ears and face.]

[dejabrew]

[That's kind of cute. Bolton's hands shift on the mug and he raises it to his mouth for a slow sip.]

Well, maybe be careful not to act like you're craving desperation pie.

Wow, I slave over a hot coffee maker for you and you come out and accuse me like this. Maybe next time I'll bring over a humble pie.

[dejabrew]

[He chuckles.]

As long as it doesn't have dairy in it.

[But he slowly savors another sip of coffee.]

Thank you, for the coffee. It's not bad.

If I can find almond milk in space I can try.

[Jamie grins.]

Good. Coming from the a Champion Barista "not bad" feels like a pretty big compliment.

[dejabrew]

[That grin makes him feel a little better, somehow.]

We could make a proper barista out of you yet, Mr. Fell.

Nice to know if my art degree amounts to nothing I can still get a fancy apron and make good coffee for cute guys.

[dejabrew]

[He nearly chokes on the next sip of coffee, only his well-practiced stable hand keeping him from sloshing it when he muffles his coughing into the crook of his elbow.]
