[Four weeks in the Starfield Penitentiary and seven people have lost their lives to Blaze Dudely's cruel game. At some point the robots cleaned up the mess left behind and by Sunday the involved rooms (including the fridge) are all clean and free of blood. In fact there's no sign left of any of the deaths that have happened on the ship so far by at least the next day. The only physical signs that people are gone are the empty beds.

On Sunday morning, you may find that you're recovering a a few other things as well - both strange dreams and some new items.

In addition, there's a new set of doors at the end of the corridor, in the space between the infirmary and the exercise yard. Looks like you've got a new wing to explore.]

I have one pack of peppermint clothes, some chocolates that look like an off brand version of ones you can get back home, and chewable vitamins.

I don't think any of them will go well with rice.

That's too bad. I don't really want to eat five pounds of rice by myself.

There's no seasoning in the cupboards or anything? We've got food again now.

[Which, y'know, thank god. He didn't want to go out eating jetsons vitamins.]

[How embarrassing.]

We do, but... That's still a lot of rice.

[empathiser]

[At least everyone else'd be too dead to care about his embarrassing end. Probably.]

What kind? Could we make risotto with it?

White rice. If you want it, it's yours.

[empathiser]

[He doesn't actually want an entire sack of white rice, Oda.]

I'm... fine, thanks. Why not just leave it in here for people to use?

The only reason not to put it in the kitchen is if we have another food shortage. ...Even so, I'll put it in the kitchen.

Anything's possible.

Maybe it would be boring to starve us twice.

If there's one thing that seems to be constant - Blaze likes to keep things interesting. For him.

Most captors would, unless they have a reason not to. Someone else's influence...

[empathiser]

It's fairly stereotypical of their nature. Or the kind of nature a person who would do this would have.

[tenimuho]

We're not kidnapped for money, or for any clear political goal. There are only so many reasons a person would do this.

[empathiser]

We don't know know we've not been kidnapped for money or a goal. It's doubtful, though.

Which leaves personal entertainment or curiosity. [He sounds... surprisingly dark when he speaks again.] Wind us up and see how we go.

There's no one who'd ransom me, and Mozu doesn't seem like she'd come from a position of money. So we'd be bad choices if it was for money.

[Seriously.]

Curiosity is a possibility. How will we react when we're stuck in here?

[empathiser]

Same. I've not got any political clout either.

We're like mice in a cage. The kind they film to see how quickly they can escape a maze when they add incentives and keep changing the lay out.

Normally, those experiments are to learn more about how animals think, aren't they?

[empathiser]

Yeah. To see how their minds work, how they solve problems and to estimate their ability to adapt and their mental capacity.

[tenimuho]

But, normally we go through all that trouble because you can't just talk to mice to figure out how their brains work.

[empathiser]

I don't think we're that good at figuring out how our brains work, anywhere. Or at least how to describe it.

Maybe whoever put us here doesn't think us any further along than mice.

[tenimuho]

...It's all a matter of perspective. Mice don't think that mice are particularly stupid, either.

[empathiser]

I'm not going to claim I know what mice think. But we are undoubtedly on the end of someone's puppet strings here. We just need to figure out how to cut them without irreparable damage in the process.

[Fair warning, he's not good at that part.]

More so than there already is.

...I don't know how to do that. You're probably better-suited to figuring that out than I am.

[Which is reassuring.]

That makes me feel so much better.
