week 2

[With the sudden pirate takeover and the sudden, tragic deaths of the crew, the second week of the Starfield Penitentiary rehabilitation project is off to a rough start. After Price's call for parlay with the pirate captain, he was not seen for the remainder of Saturday but around 10 pm it is his calm but tense voice that makes the time announcement.

Buckle in, Champions, things are about to get bumpy.]

Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday

[ooc: Don't forget to to turn in your AC for week 1 and submit your threads for the Benefactors!]

[ SWEATS... ]

Uh... yeah, basically. I mean, it's a longstanding photographic tradition!

I never said it wasn't.

But the advent of things like the selfie stick and front facing camera lenses on phones made it a lot easier. How much trickier is it to get a good quality self portrait with an analogue camera?

[ Well shit he actually sounds genuinely interested there, max ]

[ She lights up, a little. ]

I use polaroid instant cameras, so it definitely takes some doing. Lots of timers and unpredictable results.

[ That's... that's really sweet actually. Look at her light up like a Christmas tree. ]

Do you ever find the "unpredictable results" are better than the final product?

Yup! "There are no mistakes, only happy little accidents." Works in photography too.

There must be a lot of published, professional photography that started out as one of those "happy little accidents".

[ Which is... rather nice to think about, really. ]
helladoptera: tonight... (tonight so bright)

The trick is using them and figuring out how to make a point with them. Even just walking down the street you can find photographs waiting to be taken if you have an eye for it. Philip-Lorca DiCorcia takes a lot of random pictures of passers-by using lighting he likes, and his work is fantastic.

That's not a name I recognise. [Then again, he doesn't know much about photography or the arts.] But he's an inspiration of yours then?

[Don't... mind him, he's just leaning in a little and being curious at the camera. He can't see anything about this place worth taking photographs of, but apparently Max can, and he's a little interested in seeing what he missed.]

Yup! He's the man, man. DiCorcia, Dosineau, Cartier-Bresson, my teacher, Mark Jesserson, they all go out into the world and find the "little pieces of time" worth capturing.

... Hitchcock called film "little pieces of time," that's not copyright Max.

It's not a bad way of putting it. That is what they do - save a moment.

[Will... doesn't have many pictures, now he thinks of it.]
helladoptera: we'll feel it all tonight (we'll make things right)

[personal profile] helladoptera 2017-08-22 06:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Staged or not, that's what's so powerful about photographs. How real they are.

And why you're not a fan of photos that are touched up or edited after they were taken?
helladoptera: and the embers never fade... (if you held yourself up to the light)

[personal profile] helladoptera 2017-08-22 06:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, exactly. Usually it's just... advertisers or whoever lying to people.

That's fairly par for the course now though. Advertising leads to people editing pictures to look more like the ideal...

[Philosophical.]
helladoptera: tonight (we'll find a way to offer up the night)

[personal profile] helladoptera 2017-08-23 05:12 am (UTC)(link)
Which leads to them needing to edit more as the ideal gets more ridiculous. Yup.

So a career in photo editing isn't for you, then.

[ At least that's what he's taking from all this. ]

Do you just take photos of scenes or people?
helladoptera: believe in me, believe (believe)

[personal profile] helladoptera 2017-08-23 05:28 am (UTC)(link)
Usually. Depends on what I run into! There are good pictures in all kinds of things.
