Week 1

[After the initial introduction of the Overseers on Sunday, the Champions were left to their own devices in investigating the part of the ship they have access to to their hearts' content. However, the doors that Jamie and Bolton came through are locked tight and cannot be unlocked via PIP.

On Monday morning, the same voice that awakened them the previous morning chirps at them again from their PIPs at 7 am on the dot. There's also a pop-up message waiting for them: a notice announcing "office hours" for Bolton in the library and Jamie in the art room every day from here on out.

So...forgive me for being presumptuous, but...if what's in our profiles is somewhat true, then, you've lived through the process, somehow. Right...?

Sort of. I was put into suspended animation at the beginning of the project.

[And that covers the Champion title, too.]

So you were...what, flash-frozen and thawed out after one thousand years even if no one who initiated the project would be able to confirm you survived, or if anyone could still survive? That doesn't really sound like smart planning.

There were certain things that had to be done at the end of the project, and we couldn't rely on records to survive that long. Somebody had to go.

...Frederica, how old were you before they put you in, er, suspended animation?

[That kind of thing sounds like the job for a scientist...or at least some kind of adult. Even despite the number for her age, she looks like a teenager!]

I'd just recently turned eighteen.

[Look, she knows she's small.]

[cyan_maid]

Oh - goodness, you look so young for eighteen!

[voltrounds]

...I know.

[cyan_maid]

But then, you must be quite smart too, if you were picked to do whatever you needed to do to finish such a project.

[Hmmm yeah the cookies are holding up let's try shaping them into balls and putting them onto the cookie sheet. Not like we can grease them, we have no butter.]

[voltrounds]

I guess? I think the main reason I was chosen was because I was convenient. My father was one of the scientists working on the project.

...aren't you supposed to put something on there first to keep them from sticking?

[cyan_maid]

[Well that's a weird reason to choose someone for a project. Jane looks down at the tray.]

It didn't look like we had any. I'd even take vegetable oil, if I found some.

[voltrounds]

I guess we'll just have to do what we can and hope for the best, then.

[cyan_maid]

A lot of premade doughs let you get away with not using anything to grease the pans - I suppose they put enough oils and butter in them to work. Even if it's been freeze-dried, they still had to put that stuff in the dough to make it work.

[This is going to go up in smoke, easily.]

[Probably literally.]

That doesn't make them sound very good when you put it that way.

It's why it's always better - and more fun - if you make the dough yourself. Unfortunately, we don't have any other options at the moment.

[voltrounds]

Maybe we'll figure out something else later. But for now...

Oh, do you need a hand with those?

[cyan_maid]

I wouldn't refuse a hand!

[Have at it, Ricky, there's...a reasonable amount of dough left to form.]

[All right! She gets to work making little dough circles.]

Is this a bad time to mention I don't think I've ever done this before?

[cyan_maid]

[Despite how that should not be reassuring or anything, Jane finds herself laughing kindly.]

Hoo hoo hoo! That's quite alright! You can't learn about something you don't know without trying it out!

[voltrounds]

[The laughter is infectious!]

I guess not!

[cyan_maid]

[ALRIGHT by now it looks like all the dough's ready, they make a good team - and oh, looks like the oven's preheated all good. Jane grabs a tray and heads for it.]

Are you ready to give this a try?

[voltrounds]

Yeah!

[COOKING IS EXCITING. Ricky follows, other tray in hand.]

[cyan_maid]

[Opening up that oven...slipping the tray in on the bottom, so those'll be more brown on the bottom than Ricky's, whose tray will cook a little better. D'aw, she wants this to go well for the other girl so much.]

Just pop it in!

[voltrounds]

[And so she does, very carefully. The air in the oven is hot and she doesn't want to burn herself since that would contradict the hand inspection from the trial later.]

So now... we wait?
