[Other than the reappearance of the Overseer, there's no real change in the routine. PAL still makes the morning and night time announcements through the PIP on each Champion's arm, and still the Champion unitards are freshly laundered and re-hung each morning in their closets.

No other floors unlock, but Cece and Kip will still be appearing randomly to chit-chat.

Hmm, they must be kinda new or really rare in my time 'cause I've never heard of em. I know pit bulls though! The city uses em as catch dogs sometimes.

They are a more recent breed... I think only since the 1930's? I dunno, I researched a lot of dog breeds when I was a kid and looking for a travel companion. Never did get a dog, though... I would love a Samoyed or a Husky. [Catch dogs...] See, nowadays a lot of places consider them a dangerous dog because of their history. Pit bulls have a really bad rep. Which is sad because all the ones I met are complete sweethearts.

I know those ones! Gosh I actually read some of the stories about Balto in the no-maj papers last year. [She just squeals because the no-majs have a hero dog and it's ridiculous.] It's one of those things that makes you wonder if Rappaport's Law is really such a great idea. A skilled wizard could've apparated all that medicine in minutes.

I dunno about pit bulls, I've only ever seen 'em uh... killin rats so...

Oh yeah, Balto was great. They even made a kids movie or two about him.... Rapper's law and apparated? [What are those things?]

They... started being used for more than just that. Attacking people, bred to fight each other for gambling. You name it, people probably used them for that.

Rappaport's Law is the one that makes associating with no-majs illegal. And... well apparating is going from one place to another with magic. It's a complicated bit and going really far distances can be hard but there's plenty of folks that could handle that kind of distance.

Us, mostly. I mean, safer both ways, them not knowing about things they can't do nothing to protect themselves from. But keeps us from having another witch hunt.

Oh, like the Salem one? Gods, that's what an awful play called The Crucible is based on. Well... actually, it's based on McCarthyism, but set during the witch trials.

Mmm, yeah... Ilvermorny's in Massachusetts too so it was really rough back then. Then the whole mess with Barebone and Rappaport's Law just... made sense.

What's McCarthyism?

McCarthyism is named after Senator Joseph McCarthy who instigated a Second Red Scare in the USA by pretty much trying to make it seem like there was Soviet spies everywhere. It's technical definition is that it's the practice of making accusations of subversion or treason without proper regard for evidence. So like a modern day witch hunt. Neighbor thinks you're a communist? Guess who has the government knocking on their door.

The story goes that the President's daughter got sweet on this no-maj, Barebone, and told him a buncha stuff she shouldn've.

And he started a witch hunt that nearly exposed the entire community and got a lot of folks killed, not just actual witches and wizards but no-majs that couldn't defend themselves against the accusations. I mean there were some of us that were caught, sure, but we could get out of pretty much anything the no-majs set up... it was them that was getting hurt.

's why we have the laws we do. Sounds... a lot like this McCarthy fella, though.

... that really, really sucks. One bad apple ruins the bunch, right?

A lot of people went to jail or had their lives ruined by others because of the Red Scare. Nishitani? He's from the era where the Cold War was still a thing, and the wall was up, too. That's... there's a war coming in your time that will make everything awful for everyone.

[She bites her lip, looking down and trying to process that information. She'd guessed as much from Lee and Roland but... It was different having it confirmed.]

Grindelwald's gonna get his war, isn't he?

I don't know a Grindelwald... but then again, that's what I think is very different between our worlds.. our war was started by a man named Adolf Hitler. The Americans were staying out of that war as long as possible...... but it was about the superiority of a no-maj race. Guess it's close?

Even if it id Grindelwald behind it we'd do everything we can to make sure the no-majs don't know there's anything magical going on. I don't know if it's a difference in our home worlds or just wizarding versus no-maj.

I've never heard of anyone named Hitler but... it's possible there's a lot more going on in the background that your history books wouldn't know.

That war... the year is 2011 for me. The war ended in 1945. We still feel the effects from it, meaning the people in you world and timeline will, too... doesn't matter who started it.
