The Mock Trial

[Jesse McCree is dead, the first victim of, what the Overseers seem to hope, is a long game of motives and murder for whatever their reasons. With the investigation completed, C.E.C.E.'s voice comes over the system and directs the Champions to proceed to the locked elevator door at the end of the hallway. Once all Champions are on board, the elevator begins a slow descent down beyond any area that they've been able to explore so far. At least the elevator music is charming.

When the elevator door opens, the Champions enter a courtroom with 21 podiums arranged in a circle and each one marked with a name. McCree's face grins casually at the 20 surviving members from one of the podiums, a greyscale portrait in honor of the dead.]

Congratulations. We have now entered the trial portion of the test. I trust that you will do your best to determine who disturbed the peace by committing murder. Once the culprit has been found, they will face an appropriate punishment for their crime. If you fail to determine the culprit, however, they will be allowed to leave the space station and the rest of you will face punishment instead.

[ She'd been quiet during the trial. What else could she have said anyway? There's a bit of a hurt look on her face but she moves to put in her vote for the Champion Blogger, Naho. ]

[You know what, Margulis actually kind of likes this kid, so seeing her hurt face manages to stir a bit if sympathy in him. With his own vote cast, he walks over to put a hand on her shoulder.]

She did what was necessary, and is prepared to face the cost of that choice.

I... I know... and her doing that meant I didn't have to lose my dad and my sister back home but... this isn't right. I don't... feel good doing this to someone else, knowing that she actually killed that man just...

[ Ruby has a LOT of bad memories that still stick around after all those months ago and they're coming back now. Having seen someone dead again and having to sentence someone else to death is kind of legitimately painful for her to do and she looks just about ready to break down.

So don't mind if she just moves to hug him impulsively, her small form trembling a bit because she needs some kind of physical contact right now. ]
misplacedxsheath: (It was all for nothing.)

Sorry about all the edits, my phone did weirdness

[A look of surprise crosses his face at the hug, but after the initial reaction he kneels down to her eye level. His hand stays on her shoulder and he doesn't make any move to push her off.]

It is abhorrent that acting to save a loved one has the cost of death, but you do her no honor by abstaining. Live to see her death avenged, and trust that God will answer her courage and loyalty with a more deserved reward.

[ As he moved to kneel down so he was eye level with her, Ruby's silver hues fixed onto him with borderline tears seeming like they could form any moment now. Listening quietly, it took a moment before she nodded; saying she understood where he was coming from with that. ]

I...I'll try. I hope that's going to be it... I mean... she didn't do that to be mean... she did what she had to.

[ Without her scythe here she just feels so helpless and she really doesn't like that feeling at all right now.
misplacedxsheath: (Who thought that was a good idea?)

We live in a world where morality is rarely as clear as children's fables would have us believe. A kind and merciful God would not punish a soul for having been forced to choose of two evils.

Now, focus your attention toward the future. Let this motivate you not toward fear, but to resist the Overseers with every ounce of your will. So long as our spirits remain strong, they will not claim their victory. If our resolve remains true, I have both faith and confidence that we will eventually find their weakness.
