Week 4

[Four weeks in and almost half the Champions' original numbers are gone. Eight people in the span of a month and, even with the Overseers seeming increase in empathy for the remaining Champions, there is no end in sight for the Champion Excellence Program.

And again at 7 am on Sunday the mechanical woman's voice chimes to awaken the remaining champions on Sunday morning. After the initial wake-up call the message tacked on:]

Congratulations, Champions! By surviving your third trial, you have unlocked the fourth floor of the ship. A new mini map has been added to your P.I.P.! To access the fourth floor please stand on the teleporter and select the floor you wish to be teleported to.

[And again the Champions are awakened they have regained one new memory from the ones they've lost. Starting again on Sunday, as well, Jamie and Bolton will be back to their usual office hours in their usual locations.]

Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday

[ooc: welcome to week 4, everyone! Check-in has begun and don't forget to submit your memory regains!]

On the ship we had little else. Water loses its virtue apace, at sea.

[ She shrugs a very loose shrug. ]

But it's been some time since we could have it with meals, and I thought to try it again. Perchance I forgot its taste. [ She scoots around on her stool to look at Lightning more clearly. ] ... What is that?

That would do it. You must have a pretty high tolerance.

[She jiggles her glass when asked, the ice making a soft tinkling sound.] Rum. Much stronger than beer.

[ She's a few decades away from it being mainstream in Massachusetts, so she just nods. ]

A liquor, then.

[ There's a long, apparently thoughtful pause before she adds: ]

Have you skunks in your land?
bylight: (• And if you close your eyes)

[If it's cultural, Light can't tell her not to cook.]

It's a different taste from what I'm used to back home. Must be made differently.

[Or you haven't had a stiff drink in 500 years.]

No. What are those?

Low little creatures of the wood. They look alike to cats, but smaller, with foxes' tails, and all black but for the white stripes down their backs. They would make good pelts if not for the stench. But they reek worse than I could say. [ She grins to herself. ] Once, Fowler -- oh, our dog, I never said -- he chased one, and came back with no catch, stinking of the foulest swamp ever there was. We kept him tied up from the house for a fortnight, but even-- [ she's audibly trying not to crack up ] -- even then he would come a-wagging to beg scraps of any man he saw, and they would run from the yard as if the devil were on their heels.

[ She muffles her giggles with the palm of her hand before remembering there was a point to this. ]

Anyway... it tastes like that.

[ So she's got an I.P.A., is what this tag actually means. ]

[That sounds utterly awful.]

We have all sorts of creatures that can do that to you. Their breath or smells are poisonous, so carrying antidotes is the smartest thing to do. Don't think that would have helped with your little problem.

[The giggle draws a smile to Lightning's lips. It was good to hear.]

Maybe we should find you something a little better.

That would be kind--

[ Thomasin scoots off the stool while turning again, and though she lands on her feet without any trouble it's pretty clear she slipped off unintentionally! She looks troubled by this. ]

... perhaps later. Be those the monsters you spoke of?

[She chuckles softly, finishing her drink before getting up herself. Lightning holds and arm out in case Thomasin needs a help back to her room.]

Some other time.

[She nods while looking ahead now.] Some were about the size of dogs, and then there were those almost as big as high rise buildings.

Oh, you needn't--

[ But her protest is delayed by the fact that she doesn't realize Lightning's downing her drink until she's almost done. Once it's actually done with, she shuts up and takes her arm. ]

Thank you. It sounds impossible, what you speak of... but such monsters did plague the earth once. Now they live but in stories.

[Good. Lightning will walk slow enough to Thomasin to easily keep up.]

I see. They are very real and alive still. One of the ones people fear the most is called a Behemoth. They come in different sizes depending on the type.

Really?

[ She looks up (admittedly, only one inch up) with interest. ]

Such a beast is named in the Bible. Does "Leviathan" have any meaning to thy people?
bylight: (• And if you close your eyes)

[personal profile] bylight 2017-03-14 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
[She should... look up this Bible?]

Yes. He's the Fal'Cie that purifies the water inside of Cocoon.

[personal profile] curdle 2017-03-15 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Fal'Cie...

[ Thomasin sort of chews the word over as she walks beside Lightning. She wouldn't be able to pronounce it even if she were sober, honestly. ]

Is that another breed of monster?
bylight: (♣ Settles around us)

[personal profile] bylight 2017-03-15 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
No. They are beings that are practically gods.

[It's okay, drunk Puritan girl. Not everyone can pronounce it.]
curdle: (pic#11092167)

[personal profile] curdle 2017-03-16 04:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Demons, then.

[ No, Thomasin. ]
bylight: (♠ Like you've been here before?)

[personal profile] bylight 2017-03-16 06:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I wish. Demons would have been easier to kill.
curdle: (pic#10387729)

[personal profile] curdle 2017-03-20 05:00 am (UTC)(link)
But... [ she looks up, her eyes wide with the precise combination of unguarded curiosity and slight apprehension you can only get from a drunk Puritan girl who doesn't really like her status quo too much, ] ... you did kill them? These things like gods?
