I keep being told that... on both parts. He's a history teacher at a University, but when he doesn't do classes, he's got book signing tours. Apparently they get a little crazy, so he's got some die hard fans.

So you've never, ever read any of his work?

His wife is pretty protective, so she knows when to step in.

[Mira, the shyest girl Nari knows, who will fucking lay someone down on the ground if they mess with her loved ones.]

[ He does remember reading a dedication to someone named "Mira." It was pretty sappy. ]

There are a lot worse books you could read.

True, but Maple and I burned those already.

[Yeeeeeep and it's heartbreaking.]

Jane. She's from Maple Valley, but I named her that because she's sugary sweet like Maple syrup.

Hey, it's pretty appropriate. She's a good kid.

[Much later. A bottle of kale vodka later.]

She is! I keep telling her that, too.

I actually kind of want to do something for her. You feel like giving me a hand?

Cupcakes. Maple cupcakes.

Oh? That's not too hard at all. I recommend making a brown sugar cupcake and add candied maple pieces to that. The candies will melt into a gooey mess. The frosting it's where it's at. That's gotta have just the right punch of maple.

[ He grins a little. ]

Instead of telling me, why don't we just do it?

Our first mission would be having to find real maple syrup. No fake shit. Not for our Maple.

Got it. Let's see what we can dig up. Maybe Fourt's would have some.

It is rather diner-ish. Let's roll then. You can grab the books again later.

Alright. Let's do it.

[ He sets the book down and gets up, then starts leading her to Fourt's. ]

[She follows him, bouncing a bit.] I haven't baked in a while!

All the reason to give me a hand, right?

[ He smiles as he looks over at her, and when they get to Fourt's, Noct starts to investigate. ]

There's a lot of different kinds of maple syrup here.

[Hmmm....]

I would prefer Canadian or Vermont maple syrup.... but I can taste test to see which one is just right.

Alright. Let's see...

Looks like we've just got space maple syrup?

Damn... Time to taste test then.

[Going to get a black cup of coffee to cleanse the palate before testing the first one and wrinkling her nose.] Nope. That taste like boysenberry.
