Week 2

[It's been about a week since the Champions woke up in their new consumerist hellscape of a temporary home and, despite a few odd goings on and the bomb incident with Church and Nari, things haven't been as bad as they could be. No one is even dead yet! But let's see how long that lasts.

That's their decision. [He might not have liked it, but he wasn't going to give anyone the cold shoulder. After all, he was one of the bleeding hearts that Togami had mentioned.]

It's not something you want to read in a place like this, though. Not when I'm trying to keep people safe.

You're hardly going to keep anyone safe without explaining what exactly that secret of yours is supposed to mean. [He hurries to add:] Not to me, I couldn't care less. Explain it to those you say you want to keep safe. You're not going to get anywhere if you keep beating around the bush.

[Seriously, what is up with people refusing to say what they mean to people's faces? Life is easier when you set things straight]

[Somehow, despite his frustration and grief, Togami manages to drag a smirk out of Varric.]

Tell anyone but you, right.

[He sits up a little higher, crossing his arms as he does.]

It means that no matter how much I care about someone, I always neglect that one thing they need. If I had listened to one of my friends, he might not have gone off the deep end. If I had stayed with another, she wouldn't have died alone.

[There's something else too -- something he swears he should remember. Try as he might, though, he can't put his finger on it.]

[Togami sighs. Oh, great]

I literally told you I didn't need to know.

[What's he supposed to do with this useless information?

...okay, what had Kirigiri said? Don't just dismiss people's emotions as useless. This is a killing game, doing that could lead to someone being a culprit or a victim. Byakuya Togami refuses to commit the same mistakes twice. That'd be most unbecoming of him! So what, does he have to play therapist to Varric now, or something? He'd rather not, seriously.

Bracing himself for what he expects to be a tedious time, he starts]

Since when are you expected to be the one to be responsible of anyone's life, friend or not? Blaming yourself for that's senseless. Whatever circumstances those events had weren't your fault unless you were directly responsible for them. [He refrains from rolling his eyes] I know, they were friends and therefore you feel should have done more, but if you let something like your past shackle you down you're only refusing to do something in the present, so stop doing that. It's frustrating to watch.

[Togami made mistakes and although he feels less than enthused about them, he didn't refuse to change and do stuff he wouldn't have been caught dead doing before. If he can leave behind what bad choices he made before, why can't everyone else do the same?

At least he tried to be "understanding" and "supportive"]

[The attempt is noted and appreciated, though perhaps not in the way Togami might have expected. Rather than arguing, or even going as far as accepting the advice, Varric cracks a grin. It's still tight around the edges, and it doesn't quite reach his eyes, but... it's there, and that's more than either of them could have said a few minutes prior.]

Just out of curiosity, kid, how many friends do you have? [He laughed, a short, tight bark but a mark of amusement all the same.]

Besides, what makes you say I'm refusing to do anything now? Sure, I'm licking my wounds for a bit, but... ever since I got here, I've done nothing but try and offer support.

[Unfortunately for Togami, his mention of the alcohol served as a reminder that it did, in fact, exist. Varric tipped the bottle up to his lips and took a large gulp.] </small I get the feeling even daring to breathe annoys you.

Only a few select people annoy me merely by breathing. You indeed are getting close to such tier.

[Is he serious? Not really? It's not like he hates Varric or anything like that, but Varric has an innate way to get in Togami's nerves he finds rather annoying]
