[It's been about a week since the Champions woke up in their new consumerist hellscape of a temporary home and, despite a few odd goings on and the bomb incident with Church and Nari, things haven't been as bad as they could be. No one is even dead yet! But let's see how long that lasts.

[Ardyn opened the envelope, read the note inside...then looked to Xander with a cold smirk.]

Oh, they’re desperate for blood, aren’t they? Losing your nerve yet, my dear Overseer?

Far from it.

[he certainly looks a bit distressed though, and looking at certain Champions warily.

Amusingly, for how much Ardyn shook him before, he doesn't seem nearly as concerned about him]

[and as long as we’re taunting him: anyone specific he’s looking at?]

[Thomasin and Clarith, mostly as they breakdown very publicly. And anyone else that reacts violently. As if he was expecting the lashing out and was girding his loins for it]

You’re in an ill-fitting line of work if you struggle to stomach even this much.

As have I, yet you’re the one faltering in the face of no more than the faint panic you are complicit in inspiring. This is what your handlers want and the means by which your precious ‘payment’ will be earned. If you can’t accept that, then you are a poor excuse for a would-be bloodthirsty overseer.

[Perhaps Ardyn was expecting anger. Or shame.

Instead, Xander laughs.

It's a strange sound, coming from a man that seems barely able to smile without looking like he's in pain. And it's certainly not a happy sound. "Hysterical" isn't right either, though perhaps it's closer. It's a breathy, almost surprised sound. As if he broke something important and can just stare at it, as if his denial will undo it. ]

Oh yes, indeed. I wouldn't be here otherwise, Champion.

[That...strangely, was a sound Ardyn knew. One he’d heard long ago, in his own voice—the sound of I don’t care if it destroys me, of I can’t stop until this world is safe, of my life is nothing next to all of Lucis.]

[It wasn’t sympathy he felt at the familiarity, but hatred. Ardyn heard himself reflected in that laugh, heard the resignation of one who damned himself for some nebulous cause so much more important than one life...and he detested the sound knowing what Xander had done. What he was still doing. But winding up and breaking his jaw would accomplish nothing, and so Ardyn struck out the only way he could: with a pleasant smile and dissonantly cheerful statement.]

Pray it destroys you before I do. The former would be more merciful a fate, and when I get my hands on you you will understand what it takes to orchestrate human suffering for your own goals.
