Week 1

[After the initial introduction of the Overseers, the Champions were left to their own devices in investigating the part of the ship they have access to to their hearts' content. However, the doors that Blaze Dudely and Rox came through are locked tight and cannot be unlocked via PIP.

On Wednesday morning, the same voice that awakened them the previous morning chirps at them again from their PIPs at 7 am on the dot.

Enjoy your week, Champions.]

Do you need any help copying things down?

[She leans over just enough to be a polite distance, but close enough to see the sheet.]

Okay, where do you begin? Race... alignment...?

I would love that if you want to.

[He makes room for her to pull up a chair.]

Let's start with a race. Humans are kind of the jack of all trades race, they can pretty much be any class. But all the other races have something that will make them more suited for magic, or strength, or dexterity.

I don't mind it. I have some experience keeping track of things, or uh... helping out keeping track of things.

[And pull up a chair she shall.]

So, if you know what you want to do in the game, you should pick a race that would benefit it? Or human, if you're not sure.

Exactly. So if you know you want to be a healer, or you know you want to take a really big sword and smash some faces in, or you know you want to be a smarty pants know it all, then you can pick a race that come with a natural boost to the stats that will help those classes.

[ENTHUSIASTIC NODDING, yo.]

Got it. So depending on what you want to achieve during the story, and the type of character you want to make, you can tweak their personality to reflect in their skills or vice versa.

[She's looking at you now Bolton.] Like... a kind and caring person being a healer, or someone who wants to protect people and keep them safe being a warrior?

Exactly like that. It doesn't have to be that perfectly rigid if you don't want, though. You could be a Robin Hood-type thief, who only uses their skills to provide for people who have less than they do. Or you could be a Paladin who's been twisted up and spit back out by their Oath of Vengeance or a Cleric who began serving the Tempest after they survived a shipwreck that killed the rest of the crew. Any story you want to tell, you can make it happen.

You're telling a story, but giving yourself the tools to tell the part relevant to you the way you want. [pauuuse.] Within reason.

What's next, after you pick your race and class?

Then you get into the details of your character. Like height, weight, name, background, etcetera. There's a few backgrounds in here, but honestly I don't care so much about being a stickler for only using the backgrounds in this book. If you want a different origin story and you can come up with a couple of skills that you'd have because of it, I'll go for it.

[Sounds logical enough.]

And if you're in charge, then you're making everything else for the setting. World, story, etc. Do we need to any of that in mind when making our characters, or is it just a free for all?

You can make whatever kind of character you want. A good DM will be able to tweak the story to fit the characters.

Besides, life's too short to make characters the way someone else wants you to.

Okay. I'll have to have a look over and think about what I want to do then.

[Hee.]

I'm interested to see what kind of story you've got planned, especially with so many of us involved.

Well, I hope it lives up to expectations. It's been a while since I did this. I'll have to think of something good.
