Week 3

[It takes a disturbingly short amount of time for the status quo to be restored. PAL still makes the morning and night time announcements through the PIP on each Champion's arm, and still the Champion unitards are freshly laundered and re-hung each morning in their closets.

There's a new floor to explore, a perverse reward for a trial well done.]

Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday

[ooc: Don't forget to to turn in your AC for week 2 and submit your threads for the Benefactors!]

[Junpei's quiet for a beat.]

'The one who lives on... does so due to circumstance.'

...well, yeah, that doesn't mean it's somehow a bad thing or something.

It can't have been all luck, but if you've got it, use it, man.

No, I was just thinking... It's something A... my friend. It's something she said in my memory the other night. 'The one who lives on does so due to circumstance.'

She was trying to explain the anthropic principle.

...What's the anthropic principle.

[Tell him about Zero Escape, roomie.]

It's... Okay, you understand that I basically only heard this explanation in a dream, right?

[Sigh.]

The way I understand it... it's the concept that humans can only observe the universe around us because that universe is conducive to human life. So we can't observe a universe that wouldn't support us, because we wouldn't exist in that universe. Does that make sense?

Crazy dream science, got it.

[Actually listening, despite that.]

...I get that we can only see and experience things because we exist, yeah.

[Please tell him there's more to this theory than that, because he's not sure why that alone would need a name.]
misanthropicprinciple: (Kicked puppy)

I can't believe you're dragging me all the way back here to talk about weird time shit

[personal profile] misanthropicprinciple 2017-06-09 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Right. But the circumstances that allow human life are incredibly unlikely to have all come together like that. Say you were rolling ten dice. What's the likelihood they would all come up as sixes? The probability of the universe developing such that we would exist is billions of times lower than that.

But, since we know that we do exist, we know that tiny probability is the reality--at least, our reality.
