Is it really worth survivin if ya can't live with yourself after, though?

[How could anyone do something like that intentionally and be able to look themselves in the mirror after?

I guess they find a way to carry on. ...It's something you can only do if you're alive, I suppose. It's the survivor's privilege to make meaning out of what they've survived.

[He faces her fully, gaze steady and level and distantly pained.]

Isn't that worth something?

[She immediately wants to argue. That it's not worth it. That no one could make something like all of this okay. But the look he gives her, the note earlier. She doesn't want to know, really she doesn't.

S'pose that... is up to the survivor to decide.

[And she reaches out to rest a hand on his arm, squeezing lightly.]

[He blinks, smiles, and then touches and squeezes her hand in return, gentle and grateful and understanding.]

At the very least, it means someone's here who knows survival's more than just possible.

[Finally, he takes a bite of the donut stick and his eyebrows rise.]

Oh--this is really good. Did you make these from scratch?

[That reassuring squeeze of her hand makes her smile, bright and pleased. It's so nice to have people reaching out to her in return finally.]
