Week 6

[It's been six weeks and with Ricky, Kurumi, and Lightning all dead, the group that was initially 20 strong has dwindled down to only seven. Thirteen Champions have died in about a month and a half, and even the Overseers are beginning to crack. How many more will follow before this cruel experiment ends?

And again at 7 am the mechanical woman's voice chimes to awaken the remaining champions on Sunday morning. After the initial wake-up call there is no new floor announcement this week.

And again the Champions are awakened they have regained one new memory from the ones they've lost. Starting again on Sunday, as well, Jamie and Bolton will be back to their usual office hours in their usual locations.]

[True to what she said in the meeting, Natsuhi can be found by the incinerator before dinner. If you're there early enough you might even see her ripping yellowed pages out of a book, screwing them into a ball and throwing them into the room.

She'd rather set each one on fire instead. But she'll just have to watch it all burn at once through the window.

...If only she had the others.]

[Yurika walks up with her old motive envelope. She pulls it out and reads it with a sigh.]

"Misumaru Yurika condemned the survivors of her colony to death after coming to save them." I told you and everybody else already, but it's still the biggest regret I have, just like it was then.

[She gets a nod.]

Mine wasn't even something I regret. I might not have liked it, but I'd never change it.

Something else for the greater good? That's a pattern in here.

Not quite that noble. It was 'Ushiromiya Natsuhi regrets having to leave her birth family.' If I hadn't, then I'd have never had my daughter.

I guess it's like that sometimes. I'm glad something good came out of it.

I was more insulted at them for even suggesting it.

They just want us all to suffer.

Why else would they do this? I don't believe this is just an experiment.

If it is, it's a cruel one.

No matter what this is, it's cruel. They have to be getting something out of it though.

No data can be worth this, even if they think otherwise.

I know, but they have to have a reason.

Maybe they're developing something with all of our data. They did have the blueprints to the Nadesico.

But I don't have anything like that... At least I don't think I do.

Even so, they'd be monitoring our reactions to things, too. Whatever it is they're doing, it's got to be big.

I hope they fail.

[The Doctor watches quietly for a moment before speaking.]

Have you thought about what you'll do? After this is all done, I mean.

[Because apparently there's more than a few of them that will have to make Choices once they've made good their escape.]

I've thought a lot of things. How to explain to my husband where I've been for the last few weeks, the police, anyone else that would ask.

I really don't think going back is a good idea at this point... You saw what I looked like when I first got here, didn't you? They were getting worse...

[A lot worse than just putting up a fight against the Benefactors, clearly.]

Well. For what it's worth, I've got a ship that can go anyplace at any time. So. You know. You won't exactly have a limited pool of choices once we get out of here.

You know how that sounds don't you? [A weak laugh.]

Are you saying you could put me before they died? I don't think I could, knowing what would happen, waiting for it... But I don't have anywhere else.

[It can probably sound a few ways, really. He returns the weak laugh, but he sounds anything but mirthful as he speaks.]

...Not in the way you'd want. I'm sorry. The you from before would still be there, and crossing your own timeline like that's unbelievably dangerous, nevermind changing it.

And having to wait for that, knowing what was gonna happen, wondering if maybe you could find a way to change it without ripping apart the universe... I wouldn't do that to you. I wouldn't wish that on anyone.

I wouldn't be able to do it... Knowing that one day he'd phone, having no way to stop him. Knowing that if I couldn't I'd--

[She chokes and sharply looks the over way. No, she's not being caught like that again.]

[The Doctor looks down and away for a moment, to give Natsuhi a semblance of privacy.]

For what it's worth, I know exactly how you feel.

I'm sure you would, if you're really able to travel through time. I never thought I'd be having a conversation like this.
