Week 1

[After the initial introduction of the Overseers on Sunday, the Champions were left to their own devices in investigating the part of the ship they have access to to their hearts' content. However, the doors that Jamie and Bolton came through are locked tight and cannot be unlocked via PIP.

On Monday morning, the same voice that awakened them the previous morning chirps at them again from their PIPs at 7 am on the dot. There's also a pop-up message waiting for them: a notice announcing "office hours" for Bolton in the library and Jamie in the art room every day from here on out.

Enjoy your week, Champions.]

Showers

[personal profile] cyan_maid 2017-02-14 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
[Okay. Enough thinking and asking questions - Jane needs a shower. She comes in with her clean space footie pajamas over one arm, humming softly to herself. She stops when she sees the other girl, though.]

Oh! Hello there...Thomasin, right?

[So kiddo if you want to know how the shower, and furthermore how the bathroom works, now's the perfect time to ask.]

Thomasin, yes... [ man not knowing how to use the PIP blows ] Forgive me, I cannot know yours.

[ Introductions before she asks how basic hygiene works! They're not animals. ]
cyan_maid: (What's that now?)

[personal profile] cyan_maid 2017-02-15 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
That's alright - it would've been better if I asked yours instead of just saying it. My name is Jane Crocker.

[On the inside she's chiding herself for letting herself get too comfortable with that PIP information. She hates it being there, too! Ugh.]

[ Thomasin shakes her head in a way meant to indicate that it's okay, even though in reality it does bother her quite a lot. ]

Knew I my letters, I'd be the same. [ She smiles (well, her face relaxes, which is about as much as she can muster right now.) ] But I confess, near all I see here is new to mine eyes. How do you fare, Jane?
cyan_maid: (A tiny longing)

[personal profile] cyan_maid 2017-02-15 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
[Jane nods, a flicker of...well, a complicated emotion in her eyes. There's a fair amount of inequality in this place, she's noticed, even for people who should be on a level playing field as "Champions". First with the severity of the motive, now Thomasin's level of...well, schooling and technological sense...they're things that couldn't be helped before they came here, but perhaps, some things...]

I'm...well, thank you. How about you? Is there anything you're still having trouble getting used to?

Truly...

[ She casts her glance upward to shoot a dubious look at the showerhead. ]

I wondered at the use of this room. [ Can she risk a guess without looking like an idiot bumpkin... probably not but she'll do it anyway. ] Is it for washing?

[ Honestly, she's thinking of clothes, but let's just let her have this one. ]

[Jane follows her gaze. Oh...right, yes, showers. That's not a thing in...colonial America.]

It is. You, ah, turn it on, and step underneath - without your clothes, of course - and you wash your hair and body. I do believe there's plenty of shampoo and soap to do so, and towels to dry off with...though you'd usually find this sort of setup for a gymnasium than a house.

[ people..... wash... their hair..... ]

And not catch cold? I suppose if it were not oft...
cyan_maid: (What am I looking at here)

[personal profile] cyan_maid 2017-02-16 06:34 pm (UTC)(link)
You can make the water warm. [She taps the side where there's an 'H', and remembering that the other girl can't read,] If you turn the knob that controls the water this way, the water comes out warm. The further you turn it towards, the hotter it gets - and the further you turn it away, the colder it gets. That way, you can shower every day if you like, and you won't catch cold.

Never could I have imagined this.

[ Thomasin hesitates. It all seems so simple, and Jane certainly knows better than she, but... is she going to ask? She has to ask. She needs to know. ]

What of the natural coating that protects us? Does it, ah, not strip away the oils?
cyan_maid: (Eerm)

[personal profile] cyan_maid 2017-02-17 01:40 pm (UTC)(link)
[A pause.] The...natural coating?

[Are we referring to skin here]

[personal profile] curdle 2017-02-20 03:06 pm (UTC)(link)
The natural oils that keep us clear of disease?

[ She's literally talking about dirt. Please help her. ]

Mother saith to wash them away leaves us defenseless to miasma and pestilence.
cyan_maid: (:O)

[personal profile] cyan_maid 2017-02-20 03:39 pm (UTC)(link)
[Thomasin no]

Well...you do wash that stuff away, but that's also to keep yourself from getting sick. You'll be fine if you do it regularly, I promise.

[personal profile] curdle 2017-02-20 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I suppose if you all do it, it can't be so great an ill. [ She sounds dubious still, but less than before. ] How often is of a custom?
cyan_maid: (Just doing some reading)

[personal profile] cyan_maid 2017-02-20 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
You should try to do it once a day, but once every two is okay if you forget.
curdle: (pic#11057772)

[personal profile] curdle 2017-02-20 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Every day?

[ But she tugs at a wisp of hair that's escaped the neat lattice of her braids, and maybe she can see her point. ]

We did wash our faces and our arms ofttimes, but... [ she must be super gross ] I must get to it, then.
cyan_maid: (Smiling backpacker)

[personal profile] cyan_maid 2017-02-21 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
[It's okay, you're literally from another time and set of hygiene rules.] Take your time and get used to it, okay? And make sure you dry off with a towel when you're done, and wrap up in it. If you get a chill afterwards, the towel will help.
curdle: (Default)

[personal profile] curdle 2017-02-21 06:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I will. [ She hesitates, looking for said towels as an excuse not to say what she's thinking of, but unfortunately they're pretty immediately visible. ] Everyone has been -- patient with me. Thank you, Jane.
cyan_maid: Jane is neutral or unsure (Um...)

[personal profile] cyan_maid 2017-02-21 06:05 pm (UTC)(link)
[She is about to say something when Thomasin speaks up - after all, everyone should be aware of white fluffy towels in their lives - but she holds her tongue.]

Ah...it's not a problem. Don't worry about it, okay? I...am a little narrow-minded sometimes, I'll admit, but I'm not so much that I couldn't imagine that this sort of place is difficult for you to adjust to.
curdle: (Default)

[personal profile] curdle 2017-02-21 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
It is, but...

[ But she's never known so many people, with so little reason and no godly religion, to help her and be kind to her, to speak and listen to her at all. She can't say that. ]

I take comfort in these kindnesses.

[ She's already gone over to the towels and is testing their size for the purpose of modesty. One isn't quite enough, but two should be okay! ]

I pray it may be the same for others here. [ Apparently satisfied, she takes the towels and goes to hang them up. Thank god there's a curtain. She's not too shy of unrelated female nudity, but zero nudity is the ideal. ] And I am ever grateful of your help.

[ And now she's going to find out what shampoo is! ]
cyan_maid: Jane being thoughtful or accepting of things she can't change (It's alright.)

[personal profile] cyan_maid 2017-02-21 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
[She'll give Thomasin a little nod and a smile as she passes, also grateful for the modesty of curtains.] You're very welcome. You enjoy that shower, okay?

[She's going to pick a towel for herself and jump into a stall, too. Shower time, yay!]
