Week 1

[After the initial introduction of the Overseers on Sunday, the Champions were left to their own devices in investigating the part of the ship they have access to to their hearts' content. However, the doors that Jamie and Bolton came through are locked tight and cannot be unlocked via PIP.

On Monday morning, the same voice that awakened them the previous morning chirps at them again from their PIPs at 7 am on the dot. There's also a pop-up message waiting for them: a notice announcing "office hours" for Bolton in the library and Jamie in the art room every day from here on out.

Do you really think all that is just a projection? Anyone can tell it's not just bulletin board paper with dots on it. Besides, it makes more sense than being planetside.

That's why a projection might be likely. It...does have a sense of depth to it that a sheet and some dots can't replicate, even if someone were the best painter in the world.

What makes you think that we're somewhere else, if not in space, then?

Mostly because, from my standpoint, space travel to this extent - [She gestures to everything around them] - is still something limited to fiction.

But where I come from, it happens all the time! Well, not as much now because of the war... Doesn't that mean this could be a world with space travel, too?

I mean...I...suppose? But we can't say it is or it isn't, just that we don't know for sure.

I guess not. Now we're stuck with basically nothing. And if it isn't space, why have the illusion when we're already in a whole other reality?

[She's not even going to attempt to convey how much she doubts that too, but. Digressions.]

To mess with our heads? To keep us disoriented? The more these people can influence us, the more power they hold.

I'm still not completely convinced, but I guess we can consider it. We're definitely nowhere near Earth if it is space, though. The stars are all different.

I suppose...if you're in space long enough, then you can tell for certain what the stars are like at home.

[The closest she's letting herself get to "well maybe some of you guys actually do travel in space regularly".]

Of course! After all, it's important to study the charts before you even leave your planet, or you won't know where you are.

Goodness, is that really how you might navigate out there? Like what they used to do on sailing ships?

Oh, we have machines, but it's always good to have a backup and rely on your own mind once in a while! Just in case.

Just in case, of course...

[Still kind of wild to...think of people traveling in space to more than just orbits or the moon.]

I mean, what if the Jovian Lizards develop something that messes with our sensors? We could fall right into a trap otherwise!

Or...I suppose there could be some normal malfunctions.

[Still not convinced that Lizard People are a thing]

Oh, that too! Though we've got a great crew on the Nadesico working on every possible problem. Plus the ship's computer is so advanced, it's almost like it thinks on its own!

I...see...

[There are movies where such things turn horribly wrong for everyone involved how are you still alive]

Our science officer knows the place inside and out, and she and the computer are best friends! As much as you can be friends with a computer. I've never really asked.

[They could ask Dirk, he's friends with an AI. That's actually his 13yo self.]

I don't...think I know too much about being friends with a computer, myself.

Ruri-chan is a little different from most kids, but she's very smart! Even if she'd normally be way too young to be working on a battleship, Nergal said they got her from some program while they were looking for the best crew around. A little bribery later, and there she was!

[Raising her eyebrow. Smart kids are not out of the realm of possibility for Jane, but...]

Was it really only a little bribery, or a lot?

Probably more than a little. I think they gave the facility a suitcase of gold bars so they'd let her go work for us.

I wish we had a way to know for sure. This could just be an underground bunker with fake windows...

[That seemed more likely than space to her, but everyone elseis so sure.]
