[It's been about a week since the Champions woke up in their new consumerist hellscape of a temporary home and, despite a few odd goings on and the bomb incident with Church and Nari, things haven't been as bad as they could be. No one is even dead yet! But let's see how long that lasts.

[So Clarith still trusts him, still wants to comfort him, even with her own pain still fresh in mind. She's a good soul, no matter what she might think of herself, and Soma trusts her in kind.

He reaches up, covering her hand with his own.]

Yes. The man who first became Dracula, Mathias Cronqvist, did so because his wife died of illness. He vowed revenge on God for taking her life so young, by defying mortality itself. Centuries later, he married a second time and had a son, but that wife was burned at the stake as a witch, though in reality she was a healer and a woman of science. That... made Dracula wage a war of genocide against all of humanity. He's never been portrayed as anything but a hateful monster, whether in rumor or reality.

[Soma takes a deep, shaky breath.]

I told Heart earlier that I'd only just found out about this myself, right before I woke up here. I thought I was weird but human my whole life, but now I have over nine centuries and multiple lifetimes of memories, powers no human could ever control, and... a craving for blood.

[He sees that face, Thomasin. He knows what fear looks like. That same fear he saw in Mina's eyes before he fled from her into the castle, knowing that his inhuman side terrified her. Shame curdles in his gut and hunches his shoulders.]

[Meaning he's waiting for her to calmly slide out of the area and return with a wreath of garlic or something.]

[ She's not sure what would really be worse -- to know that they went through all her things, or to feel something that seems as real and familiar as the weight of her cloak and know it was nothing but an act of counterfeit, and she could not even tell the difference. ]

Yeah, that's putting it mildly. I haven't had time to process this either, I only found out a few hours before I wound up here. It's... part of why I freaked out the other day, when Church and Nari were punished. I was afraid if I smelled blood, I'd frenzy.

[Soma wrings his hands tighter for a moment.]

... I apologize for snapping at you, by the way.

What? Do you think you can just lie around and not expect people to ask you questions or care? If you wanted that, you should have put this somewhere far away from where everyone walks by.

I'm not saying I particularly care about what you do or don't do, but I can't simply ignore someone giving up like that. It's an eyesore.

Vampires are undead, Pyrrha. Not living, but not really dead, either. They're monsters that look mostly human but drink human blood.

[He opens his mouth a little, letting her see how sharp and pointed his incisors are, even retracted.]

If I smell it, my fangs get longer and I'll... well, I'll attack.

Are there any warning signs if you're losing control?

[He's not really annoyed. Actually, he feels a bit of a laugh fighting its way out of him, but he knows it would be an unpleasant, quietly hysterical sound so he chokes it back.]

But yes, it's real. Maybe not the literary version, not sure how that came about, but in my world he's very real and very much an ever-present threat.

[It's quiet, uncertain. Ardyn has made no secret that he doesn't consider any of them his allies or friends, even with his actions to the contrary, so Soma isn't sure how the man will react after he finally voices his secret out loud. If Ardyn is really a healer, then how will he see Dracula, who is the antithesis of life and mortality?

But then there's the secret Ardyn posted openly, the very opposite of what a healer would do....]

Of course we have doctors, you godsdamned idiot, but doctors don't just absorb Starscourge like some kind of magnet for concentrated evil!

I don't know. Like I said, I only started to change a few hours before I was kidnapped. I know I have flashbacks to previous lives, but I'm not entirely sure what happens to me during one. I guess... if I start acting feral, or if my personality changes, that's when you should worry?

[Ardyn thought over the situation for a minute or so; for all the daemons and wildlife Eos had, vampires were one of the few things that remained just fiction.]

[(Fiction Ardyn suspected he knew the roots of, but fiction nonetheless.)]

[Finally he glanced over Soma with a slightly raised eyebrow, gold eyes locking on crimson with a small, bitter smile.]

...That's not that terrible.

[The bitter laugh he was trying to hold back at Church's teasing?

There it goes, withered and choked, with Soma bowing over his tangled fingers.]

You can't imagine how wrong you are, Ardyn. This one creature... he's responsible for almost all the darkness and suffering in my world. He's the enemy of all life and light, hunted and slain and reborn over and over... I never asked to be this!

[The response came out with a faint chill, Ardyn's calm demeanor worn down by the exhaustion of something far more ancient than the human of thirty-five he resembled.]

I'm a monster. Or I was--I don't quite know right now.

You say this Dracula is responsible for darkness and suffering? I am our world's 'darkness and suffering'. I've been killed countless times for what I became, unable to die and unwilling to do anything but take out infinite hatred on the world because it was what I found justified. Ask Noctis--he'll tell you.
