[After the reveal of their handsome and well-dressed but stern-looking Overseer on Sunday, the Champions were left to their own devices in investigating the mall to their hearts' content. At around 10 pm every night the lights in all the shops will go down and the sturdy metal grates over the doors of the restaurants will go down. The stores will remain unlocked, though.

On Monday morning, a buzzing alarm chirps at them again from their PIPs at 7 am on the dot. There's also a pop-up message waiting for them: a notice announcing Xander will be holding office hours

[ she knew one of you disasters would be failing at being a human being today. ]

I brought you something to eat. I wasn't sure what everyone liked, so it's just a sandwich and some cake, but it's better than nothing, right?

Then congrats. Can't say the same. Even cats, monkeys, and dogs have been in space before me. It's novel yet not. They're predicting commercial space travel within the next century after all. This definitely is light years ahead of 2017.

...Hello? [She calls, quietly, into the store while she edges closer to the dressing rooms.]

[ has she been pipped to the post for the position of Alpha Mom Friend? unacceptable. ]

This whole matter of... [He gestured vaguely with the pen in his hand, briefly fumbling to find the right words.] ...selflessness. Why exactly do you, Jane, or Nari care if I've eaten anything or not? You've nothing to gain from me, so there isn't a reason to do any of this.

Hmm... It's not bad. Your shoulders are bread, but it wouldn't offset the pattern too much. If anything having a shape like yours would really highlight the design. Though with arms like yours, something shorter sleeved or no sleeve would definitely be a lot more flattering.

How about something with an empire waist? It would be easier to move in, too.

That would be a no, then. [Ardyn smiled faintly, despite himself--and gestured vaguely to the long-necked bird on the page in front of him.]

They're a common variety of bird used for transport.

[A weird pang in her gut tells her so.]

You mean people would pay to go up into space? [HUH]

[ She looks more than a little puzzled. She'd expected something like "why can't you all give me five damn minutes of peace" which would be fair enough, but that strikes her as strange. ]

It's not about having anything to gain from you? [ the rising tone of her voice telegraphs her confusion quite nicely. ] I just thought, since you got up so late, you probably hadn't had any breakfast and since I was making food anyway, I'd bring you some.

[ She smiles at him. ]

[An honest critique like that catches her for a moment... Then she's placing it back on the rack.]

An empire waist... I do think I've worn something like that before. [And a minute's search later, and a tiny 'aha!'. She's got this dress in her hands. She is also diligently ignoring those price tags.] This looks promising.

...That isn't how these things work. People don't simply give something and expect nothing in return unless they're either incredibly naive or painfully stupid.

['I don't expect anyone to care about what happens to me. I-If they do it's probably just to use me... b-but that's fine too.']

[There had been someone who thought like that once; who gave everything for the benefit of others expecting only their happiness in return. And what was it that had become of him?]

[She leans slightly more over the table, craning her neck to get a good look at it.]

Transport? Oh my, they must be very large birds for that to be possible. Are they able to fly as well?

I think we can decorate him all we want. I mean, if this works, hopefully we'll be able to make enough space anyway or even open the damn thing.

They're roughly around my height, on average. Unfortunately, the best they can do is glide short distances; they're built more for running.

Well, I'm not expecting anything in return for this. So which one do you peg me for?

[ She's still smiling and her tone hasn't soured at all, but there's something a bit challenging underlining it now. ]

So far you haven't struck me as either, but historically I am a terrible judge of character.

Water could work... we'd have to make sure whatever we were filling was clean, though, just so we're not wasting too much water.

[ Rationing water's a hard habit to break, even in space. ]

There's some scales in the kitchens we could use to make sure we're weighting things properly, too. Then people know exactly what they're lifting with.

[ Her smile turns into what can only be called a grin. That's the face of a girl who thinks she's netted a victory. ]

Then I guess we'll just have to give it a little more time and see which one of us is right.

[ and down on the table her little delivery of lunch goes. ]

Here. You're not vegetarian or anything, are you? Come to think of it, I should've double checked that before I made the food...

N...no, I'm not.

Oh, good! It's just a ham sandwich so that should be fine. And the cake's just a sponge cake, but there's some strawberries in it, too.

[ this is where she'd usually take her leave but she does not trust him to get distracted by his doodling note taking and completely forget to eat. ]

...You're just going to stand there, aren't you.
