Week 4

[Four weeks in and almost half the Champions' original numbers are gone. Eight people in the span of a month and, even with the Overseers seeming increase in empathy for the remaining Champions, there is no end in sight for the Champion Excellence Program.

And again at 7 am on Sunday the mechanical woman's voice chimes to awaken the remaining champions on Sunday morning. After the initial wake-up call the message tacked on:]

Congratulations, Champions! By surviving your third trial, you have unlocked the fourth floor of the ship. A new mini map has been added to your P.I.P.! To access the fourth floor please stand on the teleporter and select the floor you wish to be teleported to.

[And again the Champions are awakened they have regained one new memory from the ones they've lost. Starting again on Sunday, as well, Jamie and Bolton will be back to their usual office hours in their usual locations.]

[Ricky might not know much about weird social experiments, but she knows a little bit about space!]

I don't know if gravity applies in this case--there's a room where gravity can be disabled, and you couldn't easily do that with just part of a space station. It seems more likely that they have a different method of doing that. But structurally, the two-sided design makes a lot more sense--the area we're restricted to seems weirdly unbalanced, otherwise.

Also--has anyone actually seen any evidence that the floors we have access to are connected?

That's true! They don't have an emergency staircase or anti-gravity shaft for if the teleporter shuts down.

For all we know, they could be at opposite ends of the station. Or even on different stations entirely.

Wouldn't that be hazardous? I'm not even sure how we're all able to teleport to begin with, so it must use different technology from what I know, but there'd be a pretty big risk of coming out dead!

[voltrounds]

There's a big risk of coming out dead from being here at all, so I don't think they would care.

But we never die or even get injured from teleporting, and even if that thing runs on Chulip Crystals, I know none of you are from Mars.

[Have an extremely confused look. What do you even say to that?]

I'm not usually the person with the explanations...

When I'm from, teleportation can be performed using something called a geomagnetic pole. You'd expect the field to be visible if this was based on that principle, though.

Do you have to be physically altered in any way so your body stays intact, or have someone else around you who is?

[voltrounds]

What? No.

...not that I know of, anyway.

Your way sounds so much easier.

I guess.

[She still doesn't understand yours...]

You're basically activating a temporary space-time wormhole with... something something bosons, something something electromagnetic waves, time-reversal symmetry, effects of long-term exposure to the nanomachines used to terraform Mars over the past hundred years allow the person or people initiating the jump and whoever they're taking with them to come out the other side still alive... physics!

...maybe next time you should just skip to "physics."

That's true. He doesn't believe in magic, but he talks about science all the time.

He also seems to know a lot about time travel, which would require some form of teleportation to work.

Time travel and teleportation being connected was basically what I just said. Are you sure you didn't get it?

[voltrounds]

Are you sure you said something like that? I just meant because if you travel through time the planet you were on will have moved...

Oh, I guess that's true too, isn't it? But that's true, what we thought was just teleportation was also time travel. I remembered some experiments with it this week, and I'm still not sure I have them all in chronological order!
