Week 4

[Four weeks in and almost half the Champions' original numbers are gone. Eight people in the span of a month and, even with the Overseers seeming increase in empathy for the remaining Champions, there is no end in sight for the Champion Excellence Program.

And again at 7 am on Sunday the mechanical woman's voice chimes to awaken the remaining champions on Sunday morning. After the initial wake-up call the message tacked on:]

Congratulations, Champions! By surviving your third trial, you have unlocked the fourth floor of the ship. A new mini map has been added to your P.I.P.! To access the fourth floor please stand on the teleporter and select the floor you wish to be teleported to.

[And again the Champions are awakened they have regained one new memory from the ones they've lost. Starting again on Sunday, as well, Jamie and Bolton will be back to their usual office hours in their usual locations.]

A champion of champions? By killing us off, they get the one survivor they need for something bigger?

That's the only reason I can see them throwing us against each other like this. Imagine being the champion who has defeated all other champions. Would you feel proud? Would you let them keep using you to find someone else of your caliber? [People are prideful, after all. This is a likely scenario.]

They must have a reason to use one, but I don't know for what. Something more than bragging rights.

[She looks down at her PIP.]

... what if they can control us more than they are letting on?

You mean the next motive could be threatening to fry one of us if no one dies!?

That's a little too simple for their taste.

It could be, but I know it would upset people, and that's all it takes.

Not necessarily. Upset does not mean someone will fight. You can be upset your entire life and just accept it.

You have a talent for making inarguable sense while still being really depressing, Lightning-san.

[It's a talent.]

... that is the strangest backhanded compliment I've gotten.

It's just the truth.

I'm not the type to lie to people just to make them feel better.

I still think we should watch out, depressing or not.

Just don't be like Margulis and wear yourself out.

...I know. But I still feel responsible, you know?

I've been wondering about that myself.

Have you noticed? None of the incentives we've been given have had any kind of deadline or time limit, but three weeks in a row now we've had a body come Friday morning.

You think it's these damn things feeding into it? Like a subconscious nagging that some people hear more than others?

They're wired into us physically, I saw it- in the diner, last Wednesday.

[Chanel managed to show them that much, at least, even if unintentionally.]

Not quite nagging, but the same basic idea. The right neural path gettin' a little jolt at the right time, fueling aggression or fear or paranoia... it'd be tricky as hell, but like I said when we first got here. I don't think we can underestimate what these people are capable of, technologically.

So did I. I was the one who lifted the sheet-[And got the most detailed view of all. She even remembers how starkly white that bone was.]-to see just what happened... back home we had something similar, though it was out in the open in the end. Pushing us along a path we didn't want to take. We fought it, and still almost managed to do just what out captors wanted.

Yeah, fightin' that kind of thing can be tricky, especially if fighting's what the people doing it want to begin with. We might have a time of things, if that's what's going on.

The creatures people would turn into when they succumbed to their fate... It makes this place look like heaven. So I will fight. Even if it means I'll die in the end, at least I won't give up.

Sounds like a real fun place, your world. You said you managed to stop it, though?

Yes. We took down the source of the curse.
