Week 4

[Four weeks in and almost half the Champions' original numbers are gone. Eight people in the span of a month and, even with the Overseers seeming increase in empathy for the remaining Champions, there is no end in sight for the Champion Excellence Program.

And again at 7 am on Sunday the mechanical woman's voice chimes to awaken the remaining champions on Sunday morning. After the initial wake-up call the message tacked on:]

Congratulations, Champions! By surviving your third trial, you have unlocked the fourth floor of the ship. A new mini map has been added to your P.I.P.! To access the fourth floor please stand on the teleporter and select the floor you wish to be teleported to.

[And again the Champions are awakened they have regained one new memory from the ones they've lost. Starting again on Sunday, as well, Jamie and Bolton will be back to their usual office hours in their usual locations.]

[His ears flick in something akin to annoyance, but he doesn't send her away. Y'all we really do need some kind of 'occupied/unoccupied' indicator.]

A convincing facsimile. [He doesn't seem to pay it any mind, though, making adjustments to the pod in the middle of the room.]

...It's from a memory, one I don't fully understand the implications of. I wouldn't say I like it, rather...trying to understand it. Rather like getting something stuck in your head out.

Oh! So... you were doing research on something? Or wait, this is one of those sketchy facilities with the genetically engineered kids who are taught to be super smart in isolation and given nanotech implants to be able to interface with computers, right?

[That...was incredibly specific, and Shadow takes a moment to even process that before slowly turning to look at her.]

It was this creepy facility. We bribed them to let us take the kid they were touting as a miracle genius, and now she's our science officer.

...I don't think this place was quite like that.

--was it just the one child? How can you possibly bribe a facility for their own science experiment?

I'm not really sure, but I know a suitcase full of gold bars was involved. Also, when she saw the head of the project again, she hit him.

Was she an unwilling participant in the experiment? Or was her creator just that terrible?

Ruri-chan was raised there, so I don't think there was any choice involved for a test tube baby, but she seems a lot happier on the Nadesico. The ship's computer is her best friend.

...So long as she was happier. [He looks a little perplexed, but goes back to fiddling with the layout. When he seems happy (well, not happy, no) with it, he steps back and makes a few more tweaks. The pod in the middle of the room gets filled halfway with some greenish liquid, and the Shadow facsimile disappears and reappears in it, at a resting pose, eyes closed.]

I was happy where I was. Not here. This is...different. But where I had been before, I was...happy there. Maybe because I didn't know anything else, but I get the feeling I may have had it better than Ruri-chan.

You were a test tube baby then, too, Shadow-kun?

I wouldn't have put it that way. But yes. I have no family but those who taught me how to live, and I owe them everything. I can't imagine punching my creator in the face.

[Maybe his creator's grandson. Someday.]

Seems I got put back in a tube at some point.

Wait, is that why your age has a question mark, too?

Something like that. My life is...complicated. [jesus fuck that's putting it mildly] I'd been put in stasis for fifty years. Perhaps someone wasn't sure if that amount of time counted. This place came some time after I was released from stasis; at a guess no more than a year had passed between my last memories and waking up in this pod.

Oh, so it's like Ricky-chan's suspended animation! It does sound complicated, but I'm thinking maybe everyone's life is at this point.

Hm. I suppose you're right. And I imagine one might not be a Champion if their life was simple.

[He's been getting kind of more open about himself, or at least less guarded about it lately, so...he decides he could use some advice and motions to the pod and its occupant.]

Does this remind you of anything? All I can think of is...healing, or growth, or preservation.

Hm... To me, it sort of looks like one of those little plastic carrying containers for baby plants. Or even like the cockpit of a robot!

[...Y'know, he's not sure what he was expecting, honestly, but that sure wasn't it. He huffs a little in frustration and adds in the model of hulking robot Omega he'd been working on to the side of the room he remembered him lurching around at.]

The liquid drained, and the pod opened up outwards. I don't think it was a cockpit for a giant robot.

Then you're probably right about it being a stasis pod. I've heard of things like that, but Ricky-chan would have a better understanding. She is the Champion of Suspended Animation!
