now that you are not around, my world fades to a dull, lifeless grey

[Rukia will come around to everyone's rooms later, with bunny-laden notes inviting them up to the diner. When they arrive, they'll find that one of the tables in the back has been covered over with a length of fabric from the sewing room and is serving as a makeshift altar, with rosemary and, for some reason, a bottle of whiskey sitting on it alongside cutesy drawings of all the dead thus far. (Just like last time, Seth gets a spiteful no symbol across his face.)

Yurika's there too, and she speaks first:]

Thank you. I... I'm sorry for suspecting some of you a little. I was worried no matter what happened, and I knew it would be hard, but you were all innocent. If anybody wants to talk, we can.

They do this in Etria, when an explorer dies. These petals aren't quite the same, but they're the closest I could find.

You're from Earth, right? What kind of place is Etria?

It's a small town, that seems like something from medieval times. It's pretty, and all the people there are friendly.

It sounds nice. If not for the technology levels, I'd almost imagine it to be like the Utopia Colony was.

It really is nice. Maybe I'll try to recreate it in the holodeck.

[Somebody should remember it.]

It's got a lot more room to build your own scenarios than our holodeck on the Nadesico did.

You had holodecks?

It was a great way for the crew to unwind! Though it had a downside. Like Megumi-chan using it on the "late 20th century Japanese high school" setting to try and seduce my Akito, rude.

...does he have a thing for high school students?

Well, now that you mention it, he was freaking out the whole time... I didn't pay attention at the time, though, because I just got upset. How old is Megumi-chan, anyway? She says she's 17, but those voice actresses always say they're ten years younger to keep the fanbase interested.

That was the plan! To gather the best of the best in one place, even if their personalities are a little different from what you'd expect!

[It sounds like the plan might actually have been "put all the weird people in one place so they can't bother anyone else" but this seems like a bad time to volunteer that.]

They've got us working with the military now, or... I think they have. In one of my memories, it sounded like we weren't getting along with them at all. Though they are stuck-up and addicted to their rules.

Soldiers need their rules to be able to work together effectively, don't they?

[It's more like an observation than a justification.]

There's that and there's caring more about regulations than about the people who fall between the cracks.

...yeah, that can happen.

I know sometimes terrible things have to happen. Still, I don't think that's a reason not to try.

[Ricky is quiet for a moment.]

What if doing a terrible thing is the only way to prevent something even worse?

Sometimes it is. I won't lie and say it isn't. But if we can't keep positive and try not to have to get to that point, we'll be stuck forever.

[She's not sure what answer she was expecting, but that wasn't it.]

...you're more realistic than you seem.

You could say that, but I just also don't think it's realistic to assume everything will be bad. Optimism and ideals are just as real as bad things!

I don't think pessimism is realistic, either. Things just happen, and sometimes they're good, and sometimes they're bad.

I like to keep spirits up and think about good things, even if terrible things happen too and I know they do. It's just probably the best way to go.
