[Each inmate wakes up in a cell, with no memory of arriving there or of putting on the full body orange jumpsuit. There is a moderately chunky tablet wired into one of their arms, with dials on the side to flick through the different menus, including a limited note-taking function and a map

None of them are alone in their cells, either.

Whether they choose to leave their cell and explore or just stay and get to know their new roommate, it becomes clear that this place isn't anything like any of them have ever seen. For some, it's devoid of anything even remotely familiar. The door labeled Counselor's office is locked. The Counselor's office and the kitchen and mess hall all have placards stating hours when they're closed - or in the former's case, when "private office hours" will be held.

However they while away the next couple of hours, it seems like they're mostly alone on the ship. For a while, anyway.]

[He looks down at his own and shakes his head.] Whoever wrote these can not have written true. I don't go a-messing with that dark magic.

[It takes him a moment to match the profile and the person in front of him, but when he does, he gives the profile a good look over.]

You'd do well not to dismiss those tales so quickly. There's plenty of strange things about. Especially in the wilder places.

I'd have been out of a job if the dead just came back to life on someone's whim.

[People were capable of dark and terrible things well enough without attaching notions of magic to it as well.]

[A raised eyebrow] Are you a gravedigger, then? Necromancy can rarely return the semblance of life for long.

[empathiser]

No, I'm not a gravedigger.

[He rubs a hand over his eyes.]

It's right there in my profile. I'm a profiler. [Or 'was' a profiler. It's a little vague right now.]

[I mean, we've already established the profiles are totally inaccurate.] And how does that relate to raising the dead causing your job to be lost?

Because I help catch the people who do the killing in the first place.

[His lips press together.] You've no need to worry then. Most necromancers are not interested in learning who killed their subjects, and many times they do so themselves anyway.

I'm pretty sure a couple of killers I've come across would've mentioned necromancy if they'd used it. Or the forensics team would've come across evidence of it if it existed.

[Whatever... evidence necromancy leaves behind.]

Does this "team" of yours often go a-hunting in the mountains and the country? There's plenty of places those practitioners can hide up there.

[Will just stares at him for a moment.]

Yes. Frequently, even.

Many sciences have been called witch-stuff before. There's not always the strongest division between them.

[empathiser]

We'll leave that to a matter of opinion.

[He... might be being a little hypocritical, given how often he mixes his empathy disorder with science when it comes to solving crime scenes. But he trusts the science more than any magic.]

There's no magic where I'm from. That's probably a good thing.

It can be quite dangerous. [He looks to be at least somewhat in agreement.] But it can also protect.

So this is a common, recognised thing where you're from?

[Because ... y'know. There are people who practice "magic" where Will's from, but there's no evidence any of it works. And it doesn't bring people back from the dead.]

[He nods.] It's a natural thing to consider in many a case.

Humans do depraved enough things without involving "magic" [you can HEAR those air quotes] as well.

[A shrug] Of course that happens many a time as well.
